My brother MFC 8500 printer drum has a large black area causing the printed page to have a 3' line down the side of the page when printing. I cleaned the drum and it comes back in the same place on the roller. What is the problem ?

Measure the distance between the dots and that will give you the answer to which roller is causing the problem I believe the Drum is the only roller large enough to just cause three dots.
If you are seeing vertical streaks/black lines your primary corona wire is dirty and or the fax scanner may be dirty. 1)To clean the corona wire you take the drum unit and toner cartridge and place it on disposable paper to avoid spilling. 2) Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. 3) Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position. 4) Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge. 5) Close the front cover. Caution: if you do not return the blue tab to the home position it may repeat the black lines.
This solution is unconventional but it worked for me. The black roller on my MFC had irregularities on it and was creating horrible printouts. I pulled out the drum and cartridge and cleaned the large black roller. I used furniture polish to make the roller very smooth. Now it prints really nice.
Reference page 22-17 in reguards to cleaning the charge wire on the drum unit and page 22-16 for cleaning the document scanner. This is a link to your Brother MFC 8500. Hope this helps. http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_8500_EN_1354.PDF
If the dark streak appears on printed documents, cleaning the charge wire will correct it.
it may have had a dirt inside that may have been causing the lines. try cleaning with a soft dry cloth then try to print. reseat first the toner before you clean or wipe with a soft cloth
Hello sir;The streak line from printing also should be from copy, because the line come from imaging unit, check the meter count if close to or over 50,000 then replace drum and drum blade, it will take care the problem.
The brother printer you need to replace imaging unit( drum unit).
When you get the paper, can you smear the print with your fingers, or is printed on there properly.
if you can smear it, it would be your fuser not doing its job properly, if you cant, then its your replacement toner as it most likely incorporates the drum in it, which i think is your problem.
I have seen the Toner cartridge in these cause this and also thought it was drum but new toner actually fixes it, have you installed new gen toner as well as drum? Make sure you tell machine you have fitted new drum too,
