Try the DVD disk in some other computer, to ensure that the disk itself is OK.
Try some other "known-good" DVD-disk in your Toshiba SD M1502 drive.
Or, spend $40 and purchase a brand-new, CD/DVD reader/writer, to replace the faulty device.
I've already tried using other DVDs that do work and they to cannot be read, as for moving it to another machine, I feel that is unecessary because it has worked in the past on similar DVDs. As for buying a new one, the whole point in posting on here in the first place is to avoid doing that.
Also in addition to the previous comment I don't have easy access to another machine at the moment.
Since it is a "fail" for _all_ the DVDs that you have tried, the DVD-drive defnitely is _broken_.
If you take it to a qualified technician, they would charge a minimum of $25,
and then say that it needs to be replaced, because it would take him/her more than $40 in "labour" costs to trouble-shoot it, and to try to find the correct replacement parts.
On FIXYA, you get the same "spend $40 to replace it", for _FREE_.
It's _really_ surprising that you don't know _anybody_ with a stand-alone DVD-player (or a computer with a DVD-reader) that can verify that your disks are perfectly fine.
Remove the drive, and take it to a computer-store, and let them "test" it.
If it fails, then buy a "compatible" replacement drive (parallel-ATA or SATA) from them.
