I am running OS X 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade my operating system?

Please provide more information.
To what would you like to upgrade it?

Since OSX Mavericks was just announced, I'm going to assume that's what you're wanting to upgrade to.

Not all Macs can run Mavericks.

Mavericks Capable Macs

Mavericks, like its predecessor Mountain Lion, requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space:
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

If your Mac isn't one of the ones listed above, you won't be able to upgrade.

If you have an iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini model that was originally released in Early/Mid 2006, the latest version of Mac OS X your system supports is Snow Leopard.

Mac os x updates dont work when i try to go from osx 10.5.8 to osx 10.6.1

If you currently have 10.5.8 on your machine this is the highest update that you can have if you have system 10.5. To upgrade to 10.6.1 you will have to buy 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and upgrade 10.5.8 to 10.6 then you will be able to run system upgrade to 10.6.8.

Nikon transfer quits unexpectedly when i connect it to my Mac

I have had that issue also, have you recently upgraded you Mac operating system?
Nikon software can lag somewhat behind Mac up dates, so for argument sake if your software (nikon) worked on OSX 10.5.4, and you have upgraded to 10.5.5 it may not work as nikon have not upgraded / released update version to cope with Mac's updated OS.  You may need to check with your Nikon Support via local website / phone to check what version is available to you.

Upgrade macOSX 101

If you have OS X 10.1.5, you would have to do a fresh install of 10.5 because you can only upgrade to 10.5 from 10.3, anything before you would have to archive your data and do a clean install.

Installing OSX version from a dmg file

It is possible to install the OS from an image that's been generated on an external HDD as well, but you can't install the OS from a disk image that you're running within the OS. If you lost your installation disc, you can get a replacement by calling Apple.
