There are no 4GB SD cards. A card that size is actually an SDHC card. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different. Many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Just purchased a 4GB SD card and I can't take pics...says to format card how do I do that

In most camera there is a setting to do or if you put your SD card into a computer or a card reader (that plugs into a computer) and go to the 'my computer' or 'computer' part you should see the SD card there, you can right-click it and select format.

Formatting is sort of like deleting everything on the card so that a camera or device can make its own working files on it

The DA5 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You have to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Was OK, but now memory card requires formatting? Kodak Easy Share C-530. I tried several times to put in new memory card, but it always says it needs reformatting and when i try "continue" it then goes to:...

She is not arguing with the camera. Sheesh. When she says she hits "continue" she is talking about continue for the camera to format the card. But instead of formating the card it says filesystem error e00100. The camera will NOT format the card. I have the same problem. I can format the card on the computer, but again the camera says it can not read the card and needs to format. You choose to format, and it says filesystem error e00100. My card is brand new. So I used cards I have owned for while and used in other cameras. Same thing happens. I tried 4 different cards. A 4gb SDHC, thought that format was not compatible so switched to a regular SD 2gb. Same thing happened. Also tried Standard SD 16mb & 128 mb. All do the same thing.

Message: Memory Card Error - Memory Card Parameter Error on 4gb SDHC card

I have been rummaging around trying to find two solutions: 1) to get my Toshiba Satellite card reader to read SDHC cards and 2) to get my desktop USB ports to read SDHC cards. While MS offers a hotfix for XP, it does not always work because of the different Chip Sets in computers. I have also read where posters say that the SDHC card works in the compter NOW, but NOW will not work in the camera... and the SDHC card NOW works in the camera but will NOT work in the computer.... I found a tekkie article that may help clear the air... SDHC cards are formatted in Fat32x (NOTICE the "x") and SD cards are formatted in Fat32 (no 'x') and these compatibility problems arise when the user unwittingly or unknowingly RE-formats the SDHC card, either when it is put in the computer and won't read or when it is put in the camera and won't read... but just don't bother to mention that THAT is what they did upon inserting the card and only proceeded to complain about an apparent incompatibility. The camera or computer might even mislead you asking if you want to format the card..... but all is not lost. The Panasonic site gives a program AND a pdf instruction book on How To ReFormat an SD or SDHC card specifying the proper Fat32x or Fat32 format. Hope this helps.
