Thinkpad r40 wont reboot

After pressing the power button, computer doesn't power up. The battery light is lit and there's another symbol lit as well. i'm not sure what that symbol is for though. It's left of the battery light symbol. It's looks like a circle with a z in it.

Batteries can develop a dead short and cause a no start. Try starting without the battery. Other things you can try is checking the power supply with an ohm meter,or plug it in and stick it in your mouth, but me personally, I'd use the ohm meter. Also check the memory, a faulty memory chip can cause this. If none of these work, them I'm afraid the problem may be with the power management chip on the motherboard. If the pm chip is malfunctioning, then motherboard replacement is your only option.

HI, I AM SANDIP FROM CENTRAL ACCOUNTS OF DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT A UNIT OF SAIL having IBM Thinkpad type 2682 ,Product Key GXR3W-GHM34-7RFFM-BVCQJ-WGF4G. PROBLEM- WHEN I AM SWITCHING ON THE POWER A ...

As soon as anything appears on screen after power-on, press F1 (keep clicking it until the BIOS setup screen appears). The first option on the list is Date + Time, click on that, and enter correct date/time. Then press F10 to accept + reboot. If this error happens again, it means that the CMOS battery (which keeps your settings alive) has died; it is cheap + easy to replace, however you have an R40 model, and I avoid working on Rxx series so that job may be harder. I could point you to the R40 service manual, which is very good to dis-assemble that laptop (it is necessary to lift keyboard to get to CMOS battery, which involves removing some screws from the bottom.

Need to restore facory settings on ibm r40

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD.
Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD.
thanks and have a nice day J-

IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

Laptop will not turn on

The two most common causes fot this on the IBM machines are the battery and the memory. Start be removing the battery and starting with the power supply only. Then remove the memory and try each chip one at a time in each slot. If these don't work, then I'm afraid a component has failed in the power management system on the motherboard. Failed power management systems are also common with these, but not as common as a battery or memory failure. If it's the power management system, unfortunately, the motherboard will need replaced.

Ibm thinkpad r40

This could be a problem with the battery, try removing the battery and starting on the adapter only. If this doesn't work, then I'm afraid it is going to be a motherboard problem, most likely with the power management system, this is the most common area with this type of problem. You can take it in for diagnostics, but I'm afraid you're going to end up having to replace the motherboard in order to fix the problem.
