We just had a blackout and now that the power is back on I cannot get my Sony DAV-C700 DVD player to work. We pressed the power switch/indicator on the unit and it turns red but we cannot get the unit to do anything else. We know the remote works because we can turn the TV on and off with it but the DVD player does not respond.
Thanks. No. There is nothing showing on the LCD. It appears to be -- for lack of a better word -- dead. Thanks. No. There is nothing showing on the LCD. It appears to be -- for lack of a better word -- dead.

Our system has had exactly the same problem for about a week and yesterday we managed to get writing on the screen which read "protect" then it went again, but now back to doing it again. Is it because the dvd player is too close to tv? We going to move it and try that out!!Our system has had exactly the same problem for about a week and yesterday we managed to get writing on the screen which read "protect" then it went again, but now back to doing it again. Connect RCA Red-White audio cable to INPUT of DAV-HDX500 and hook it to TV AUDIO OUT pins at back of TV. Now select INPUT in DAV-HDX500 to get TV sound in Sony system speakers.
The DVD Upgrade is an advanced modification to your DVD player, which adds extra features and enables you to get more from your machine. The upgrade supplements the DVD player and in no way harms the playback quality or removes any performance features of the machine.
Players Supported
The following DVD players are supported by this version of the DVD Upgrade:
Sony DAV-C700 Sony DAV-S400 Sony DAV-S500 Sony DAV-S800 Sony CMT-S9D
Macrovision & CGMS disable
All DVD players have a system called Macrovision built in to the player, which is designed to stop the copying of DVD discs to video. However, this system can have adverse affects on some projectors. For this reason the DVD MOD Upgrade disables Macrovision to solve any problems.

* The DVD can no longer prohibit you from using the fast-forward, chapter change or Audio-/Subtitle-/Angle switch. You can no longer be forced to watch intros. Just press [TITLE] or [DVD MENU] and select PLAY.
A bizarre coincidence but our Sony DVD player DAV C700 did exactly the same when the kids were watching a DVD. All other functions on the system are still working but the DVD player wll not eject or play - and the self diagnosis function C 81 remains illuminated on the display.
It looks like all you'll need to do is hook up audio out from DirecTV to audio in on the surround sound system. Sony has an interesting hookup recommendation guide on the product support site:
That should give you the connection options. The short answer, though, is to connect the best audio out from DirecTV to an audio in on the surround sound and then choose that option in the surround sound system when you want to watch TV.
A lot of "aged" problems relate to the power supply with this type of unit. If you are a handy chap and know what capacitors are you will find that finding and replacing the "dry" caps in the power supply will fix most problems including streaky pix and crackly audio.

I had the same problem and searched FIX and found a solution for a Phillips DVD player that worked on my Sony DAV-FC7 dvd player. Someone posted that they called their Phillips Tech Service and was told to (a) unplug the dvd unit from the wall and wait 20 seconds, then (b) press the standby+plug the unit back into the wall at the same time and hold for 10 seconds. I did this for my Sony DAV-FC7 which would not power on nor eject (just red light on). IT WORKED!! after doing these steps, my SONY powered on and the rented DVD ejected. The dvd palyer works again. Thanks fellow FIXYA "posters".
