A manual is always helpful to know how to use the machine and clean/maintain it. Your older mechanical machine probably needs a good cleaning and oiling (sewing machine only).
Some videos may be helpful. Not necessarily your particular, but the threading process is very similar between models. The top thread goes through some thread guides, the down around the tension unit, up to the take--up lever, back down through some other guides and then through the needle. This is where your owner's manual would be very useful. White Sewing Machine 477 Model How To Thread Your Sewing Ma
I remember my mother traded in her Singer treadle for an electric White machine when I was a kid.
Even though the following is not your particular model, the process is very similar from one machine to another, so what you aren't able to get from the above links, you may get from these. Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread so the thread will seat properly.
Hi
You can download a free manual from the Singer site. http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
Just type in w1418 and click on search.
On the next page click on free download!
I don't know about websites that show you how to thread this specific machine.
You could try looking for a video on www.youtube.com
Search for videos using the terms threading white sewing machine.
Hope this helps!
There's nothing wrong with the newer plastic sewing machines. Most of them are plastic now and not as heavy as the old metal ones. You said that the needle moved smoothly but what you need to know is if the needle thread picks up the bobbin thread. If you don't know how to thread the machine either check the manual or ask someone in the shop to thread it. If anyone there sews, they will know how to thread it. If the machine makes a stitch go ahead and get it. It the bobbin thread is not picked up by the needle thread IT WON'T STITCH and then you'll know that the timing is off. That's a repair job and will be way more than what you paid in the thrift shop.
Was wondering where I could get a manual for my White 1899 sewing machine? Would just like to have one with it, I also need to know how to thread it. Can you help?
