It's a hardware issue. hopefully you purchased the extended warranty because it has to be repaired. my 30 GB iPod has the same problem and any headphone I use has the same issue. How old is the iPod?

Try restoring the ipod or cleaning the ipod jack first. Usually it is caused by the dirt accumulated inside the jack. The ipod thinks there is a headphone inserted even when there is none.
It sounds like you have a headphone jack failure. Have you had any difficulty inserting the headset? Was there any event that happened when headphones were in and working.
this is cheapest way to go with this issue that i have come across . it will use a dock connector line out to male audio the next is audio female to female coupler . basically you are bypassing your audio jack out to listen through your dock connector .
This is a common problem with the headphone jack - if you google "ipod 30Gb headphone jack repair" there are both places that will replace the jack and places that will sell you the new "ribbon" connector and hold switch and jack (it's all one unit). If you're comfortable opening the iPod and have a TINY (#000) jeweler's philips head screwdriver you can replace the unit with no soldering. It helps if you have patience and small fingers and good light; you'll have to fasten the ribbon connector carefully. I paid under $10 for my last part but I've seen the same part for $30+, so caveat emptor. For that price they should put it in for you...
Connect the ipod to your desktop computer Rear USB port and charge it for at least 4 to 8 hrs
Then try to reset the ipod
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
I think it's probably a damaged audio jack. If you're still in warranty, get it off to Apple. If not, you've got 3 choices;
1. Attempt to fix it yourself. I managed to get stereo again by opening the ipod up and inserting a staple in the bottom of the jack, to fit between the headphone and the ipod's audio input. This took some fiddling around, using tweezers, and will probably not last long if I take it out somewhere. I might attempt removing the audio jack and seeing if I can bend the metal connects for the right audio channel so they touch the headphone cable again. An alternative to this method would be to put some cardboard in the audio jack socket and adjusting it so that it brings the hardphones back into contact. Someone did this and posted the results on their blog, but I forgot the URL...
2. Buy a new audio jack and replace it yourself. There's an ipod repair wiki out there, and several of the replacement jack suppliers have detailed instructions. It's about 40 UK pounds for the replacement though....
3. Get someone to repair it. Expensive, about 60 quid, but perhaps worth it if you're scared of further damaging your precious beast.
Note though that there have also been issues with software updates and audio output, search the apple discussion boards for more details...
I share the same problem - I'm worried it's due to routine wear-and-tear on the jacks, so the connections are no longer solid. I hate to think I need to get it serviced for this. Usually buying a new cable has worked, but that gets expensive too...
