These units run hot and always have even when "off" ( I have four of them and putting your hand on any of them is always uncomfortable). To tell if yours is abnormally hot, do the following:
On your remote:
1. Hit menu
2. Go to the bottom selection "Parental, Fav's & Setup"
3. Hit "System Setup" on the next page
4. "Info & Test" will be selected, press the "Select" button on your remote
5. On the right you will see "More System Info" move the yellow select bar to this and hit the remotes select button. "Please wait" will show up while it checks your internal settings and readings.
What to look for:
- About 9 lines down you will see internal temp. and a reading in 'F.
Mine have been as high as 138' F (With nothing on top to stop ventilation). If yours is much higher, I would go to Directv and ask for assistance. I have always had great success getting to them at 1-800-531-5000.
Suggested general solution:
Anyone familiar with electronics knows that heat is a component killer. Since these are lease receivers, I have to think that DIRECTV has done some amount of homework and find these high temperatures "acceptable" if not ideal. If I were you, I would get a lop-top cooling pad off of eBay or from Bestbuy or Walmart that has a USB connection and plug it into the back of the receiver. I have been running mine for over a year now and my max temp, even on hot days is 118' F. A full 20 degree drop.
I placed my cooling pad on top of the receiver so that it sucks air out of its vented top cover and blows it into the room. This works great and, since it is USB power compliant, it does not over-stress the USB port on the receiver. Just keep an eye on it as the fans will eventually fail. I simply check my temperature every once and awhile to make sure it is "cool".
Hope this helps and best of luck! -Dan

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to get something done just as soon as I can actually get through to someone at DTV.
FYI: I've been trying for two days to get through to DTV for an unrelated(?) problem without any luck. Any additional advice?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks.
Same with my H20 Box
