In control panel, most laptops and desktops have mutliple display drivers. One is the default driver to suite your VGA board and one will be a driver for low resolution, (safe mode for instance when Windows does not load many drivers).
Check the Function key and F5. On a lot of laptops the Function keys enable and indeed disable the laptop screen.
Look for a drawing of a screen on the F keys and press FN key at the same time.
