hello there, i must admit, at first i was upset that i was most likely going to be stuck with a camera that would be of little service to me due to the display language. please, do not take what i am going to say the wrong way but this is what happend after i received your response.

i was upset and i told my 11 year old son to take the camera because i am too upset to fiddle around with it now and as GOD is my witness, two minutes later my son called out to me : " i got it, i set it to the english language". i did not believe him and he came over and showed it to me and it's true, he did set it to the english language.

Work your way to the setup menu, then go to settings (its icon will be like a wrench and a hammer of some sort) browse all the way down to the 4th line before the last item, then press the right arrow, you will be able to see other language options, theres a lot.

good luck, hope you find it.

well a the good thing is the camera is working, most canons are made to have multiple languages, but since it is working, good for you, and the kid deserves a pat on the back.

    enjoy the camera hny4jc

The cameras are not meant to have multiple languages. You accidentally received a Japanese version of the camera. Call of the manufacturer and they should send you an English version. Let me know if you need anything else and I would be glad to help

Change language from japanese to english on NEX-5N

You absolutely cannot select any other language on Japanese domestic SONY models. The professional line up of camcorders come with an English selection in the menu, but not the consumer models.
Suggestions by well intentioned but ill-informed people to follow the menu in the English user guide, will not get you anywhere. The Japanese models do not include this item in the menu. Plain and simple.
Visitors to Japan should be careful when purchasing items here as they more often than not only include Japanese manuals. SONY and Panasonic also only include English menus in their cameras. Canon and Nikon do have an English selection, but this should be confirmed at the point of purchase not after returning to your country!! Furthermore, warranties are usually only valid for Japan.

How do change the language back to English?

Press the Playback button (marked with a right-pointing triangle). Hold down the FUNC/SET button and press the MENU button. Use the cursor buttons to select a language and press FUNC/SET.

The full instructions are in the "Setting the Display Language" of the User Guide (page 14 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one at

Display is in japanese and I don't know how to change it to english

Try taking the batteries out overnight. That should let the internal battery drain so that the next time you put batteries in the camera it will ask you what language to set it to.
Second. Go to any camera store or even walmart with camera in hand. and take a second camera and hit its menu "the one at the store thats set to english." and find out where the language selection is at so that you can do that same thing on yours and you wont have to worry about being able to read what it says on yours. and then you should be able to switch it back to english.

The only problem would be if you bought this camera online from a Company that deals with Grey Market cameras which are camera that are sent from another country that are not meant to be sold in the US and sometimes those cameras dont have english. But I would try those other two options before worrying about that.
