Fisher Price Geotrax Remote Control Train Demolition Team Logo
Posted on Dec 01, 2010

I have a geotrax train that is not responding to its remote. I put brand new batteries in it and it still does not work. The remote makes the noise and the red light lights up on top of the train. Is there some sort of reset botton to make the train go again?

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2014

I had the same problem with two of our three engines. I read somewhere that you can get them running by hitting the side of the engine against a hard surface. I can't believe it... IT WORKED! I guess the motor gets **** and hitting it will get it going. All three engines are working now.

I was really skeptical, but banging the engine on a hard surface worked for me too! How nice to have an easy fix! I couldn't find an answer anywhere else on how to reset the remote or train -- luckily I didn't need to since the banging worked.

  • tomswing Jan 29, 2011

We had 4 out of our 6 unresponsive as well. After reading this my wife smacked one against her hand on the side of the train. It immediately was working again, amazing!

  • ehandrn Mar 03, 2011

I am beyond belief. I am sitting here playing with the Geo trax my Grandsons got and tried eveything - new batteries, cleaning, etc. then I read what to do here. Gave it one smack with my hand the train started running! Thank you! It did stop one more time. One more smack - working again!

  • 4thosehokies Mar 03, 2011

UNBELIEVABLE!!! just worked for me too!

  • alabubba Mar 04, 2011

I bought a large selection of track and 4 RC trains at a yard sale only to find that none of them worked. I tried the "Smack" method and it worked. My grandson is going to be so cheesed when he comes to Grandpa's house.
    Thank you morn2112

It's almost hillarious! After changing the batteries three times and leaning contacts, I searched on the web for a solution and came on this site.
Smacking the trains on the floor very hard did the trick!! THANK YOU !

I didn't believe striking the train against a hard surface would work, BUT it did work. I was about to trash my sons train after the new batteries failed to make it work. But I happened across this web post and read the comments. I dropped the train on the floor and the darn thing start working!!!! Seriously. Thanks guys. My son is happy and you saved me sixty bucks. :)

Can't believe it but yeah, a couple of gentle whacks works. We had two trains that had been stored for less than a year, got them out and put fresh batteries in but nothing happened. We read the posts about whacking the engines and after taking one apart to no avail, my sister picked one up, whacked it gently against the table top and PRESTO! it started working again. Even the one we took apart and reassembled began working after a couple of whacks. I don't know whether to be impressed with the quality of the Geotrax or appalled!

  • Nettie R Jul 17, 2014

Sorry it did not work for you. I have a friend that didn't like the idea of whaking her trains so she put one in a pillow case and then whirled it around really fast hoping the centrifugal force would do something. And it did. Two out of three of her trains started working.

Wow! We just unpacked our Christmas Geo Trax train after being stored for the year. I removed the batteries last winter and replaced ALL of the batteries with new batteries. The remote worked the train worked, but the remote would not activate the train into motion. I tapped the train on the side with my hand. It worked. Our Christmas train in now running around our Christmas tree and I have three happy Children.

I'm laughing hysterically..... IT WORKS!!! This is our 3rd year with this train and my son has been so excited to set it up. The remote made the noises, the train lit up but wouldn't move. A few good hard WHACKS on a think, soft cover book (flat on the side of the "coal car") and the darned thing is running!!!

Honestly??? So I whacked my kids train outside on the cement a few times. That did not work. Came back inside and just kept gently smacking it against the desk on the mouse pad and it truly just started working. So strange. I tried the friction thing too and that did not work. Crazy.

Copied this from another forum. It worked on all 4 of our broken trains and seems less damaging than banging. :

Make sure you have good batteries and hold the controller in the forward movement position. Then run the train forward repeatedly on a surface with friction (I used my pant leg). I got two old trains to work again, and I'm hoping to fix one more.

The theory is that this works because it uses a magnetic coupling instead of a direct drive.

It only took me one super gentle swipe across my leg! Better than smacking/bashing them because that can knock wires loose and stuff. Hope this helps everyone! :D

I have 6 Geo Trax trainsand a million miles of tracks LOL. All pretty old and boxed up for years in climate controlled storage. He wanted to play with them again after seeing all the bins they were in. They didn't work. We both were so sad and contemplated buying all new trains because we loved them so much. Came across your forum and tried hitting them as suggested. IT WORKED!!!!!!! TY so much for the suggestion.

It is 2015 and thankyou so much for your tip. I love our Geotrax set and was so disappointed when it stopped working after changing batteries. The first two trains needed a BIG few hits. The other one needed several. We now have three WORKING trains and some very happy children and parents!

Haha! Amazing! It worked for us! We have some old trains...bought second-hand in 2010. One controller works two of the same trains and the train that actually matches the code on the controller is what stopped functioning. Hasn't worked in a couple years. Tapped a few times each side on the table and it started right up! (Aug 2014)

Sept 2018: pulled out the old Geotrax from its box and set it up. Remote worked fine (made its sound effects, etc.) but the locomotive had corroded batteries from long storage (I know, I know...). Replaced batteries and the light worked, but the locomotive didn't run. I despaired when I couldn't find a replacement for sale at the Fisher Price/Mattel website, but then I found this site. I can't believe it myself, but it worked! A couple of smacks and it was working like new. Thanks!!

Mom was obviously aggravated when I came home last night after spending hours switching batteries and trying to get any of the 6 old engines working. These were stored in a non-climate controlled 100 degree garage. We have a ton of track and buildings all bought 2nd hand.... neways... before heading out to buy 1 new train, I saw this post and have gotten 2 engines to work with hand smacking onto the carpet. You will certainly at least smile when an engine starts. G-luck... I've not given up on the others... so we will see.

Sesame Street 1996 train engine not reacting to remote

If your Sesame Street train engine is not responding to the remote, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try: Check the batteries: Make sure the batteries in both the train engine and remote are fresh and properly inserted. Check the connections: Make sure the train engine and remote are properly connected and paired. There may be a reset button on the engine or remote that you can press to reset the connection. Check the distance: Make sure you are within range of the train engine. If you are too far away, the remote may not work. Check for obstructions: Make sure there are no obstructions blocking the signal between the remote and train engine, such as furniture or walls. Contact customer service: If none of these steps work, you may need to contact the manufacturer's customer service for further assistance. They may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or offer a replacement if the train engine or remote is faulty.

Train lights up but doesnt move

Tried smacking the train on the concrete, didn't work. Then I smacked one side, then the other, the wheels started turning like a charm. Getting the train set up for my 3 year old grandsons visit. One happy grandma right now.

Hi I have a Rio Grande Train set that I bought for my son. The train works but is not responding or working when we use the remote . Ive out brand new batteries in the remote the light comes on when we...

Look for a small opening with little white tabs that can be moved up and down, on both the train and the remote. All the tabs must be in the same position. ( Same thing on a garage door opener.)
If that's not it, make sure the batteries are in correctly in both items, reversed batteries will run lites and such, but not remote controls.

I replace the batteries in the remote control and the train will not go. Is there batteries in the train that might need to be replace, if so, where do I find them?

According to the Instruction Manual it requires 6 AAA batteries, you will need a Phillips screwdriver to access the panel where you must replace it.
The remote controller and the engine need batteries.
Engine
• Locate the battery compartment on the back of the Engine. • Loosen the screws in the battery compartment door with a Phillips screwdriver. Lower the battery compartment door and insert three "AAA" (LR03) alkaline batteries. • Close the battery compartment door and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Do not over-tighten. • If this product begins to operate erratically, you may need to reset the electronics. Remove the batteries and replace them in the toy.

Geotrax remotes work..trains wont go. I have cleaned contacts..new batteries...and cleaned axles

Aha! I found this on another forum and it worked for me!

I had some luck using a trick I read on the yahoo geotrax group.

The controller for my geotrax train is not working...any tips?

Yes! Thank you! Holding the remote in forward and running the train over and over worked! It took me a few tries, and finally I did it for about 30-40 seconds continuously, and it worked!!!! Thank you!!!

Geotrax is not working...new batteries in remote control...batteries go anywhere else?

I assume you have batteries in the engine. If the engine light comes on and the remote makes noise, the engine motor may be stuck. Try hitting the side of the engine against a hard surface, which may get the motor moving. I had this problem with 2 engines and fixed both of them.

I had the same problem with two of our three engines. I read somewhere that you can get them running by hitting the side of the engine against a hard surface. I can't believe it... IT WORKED! I guess the motor gets stuck and hitting it will get it going. All three engines are working now.
