The e74 Xbox error's principal cause is overheating, due to excess heat causing damage to various components, and eventually major malfunctions in the hardware of your console. Why is this heat able to build up and cause damage that leads to the Xbox 360 e74 error? This is actually due to cramped case design and a lack of cooling devices such as fans and heat sinks. Although overheating is ususally a problem for all electronic devices, the Xbox 360 does seem to suffer particularly badly from this issue. unless you have a bit of technical knowledge than the best thing would be to A) fix your Xbox e74 problem by sending your Xbox 360 back to Microsoft for repair or B) buy a new one. there is no easy way to permentaly fix it without taking your xbox apart and the "towel trick" which is where you wrap your xbox in a towell power on until it overheats and shutsdown is only a temporary fix and will cause major damage to your xbox in the long run. fixing yourself consists of stabilizing the heat shields by removing the old brackets and replacing them with new heat paste and bolts so the best thing if you are dedicated to doing it yourself would be to probably buy a manual online. you shouldnt need to pay anything over $30 and make sure you get a full manual because alot of them only deal with the "red ring of death" (which is three red rings)
hope this helps
