I have a hotpoint RGB745EEHBB, and after i turn the oven on to cook I can see the coil glowing but I smell gas, and then after about a minute or so I hear a boom and then finally its lit, what can be the problem

  • Anonymous Nov 30, 2010

I just replaced the iginiter a month ago, what happens is I push the button for the oven to go on, you can see a glow from the oven on the bottom faint smell of gas then after about a minute or so you hear a bang noise. Also once I had the door opened to see what exactly is going on and right during the pop or bang noise, a blue flame came up pretty high from the bottom. But like I said about a month ago I had a repairman fix the igniter and I really dont want to make the call again cause it already cost me 175.00 to fix the first problem. I am wondering if I should just buy a new stove.

You need to replace the igniter, it controls the how much the gas valve opens by how much electricity passes through it. Sometimes when the igniter gets weak, it opens the gas valve just slightly but it is not yet hot enough to light the gas. you can purchase the igniter you need at http://www.reliableparts.com/ using your model number.

The repairman should have found any unordinairy issues when he pulled it apart. He should not charge you to come back and check it out. The only other cause would be the gas/air mixture is open too far and leaking the gas out the sides partially causing the small explosion.

My oven won't lite and there is no gas smell

either the gas valve is bad or the ignitor/glow coil is bad, most likely the glow coil as gas valves don't fail, but both are in a series circuit and rely on each other to operate and light the flame, check both with a continuity tester and if they show resistance they are good, but get the specifications on how much resistance on the gas valve and NEVER connect the gas valve alone or directly to 120 volts a.c.

Oven has worked on and off for the last year, now doesent work at all, i have the igniter exposed and it is glowing red, you do not smell gas at first but after about 2-3 min you begin to smell the gas,...

If your unit has a separate gas valve for the oven burner, that would be my first guess. But I would also check to make sure that the thermocoupler was not corroded, coated or defective.

When you turn on the oven the egniter glows, but it may take several minutes for the thing to light. sometimes you smell gas and sometimes not.

This is usually a sign that the ignitor is wearing out. Even though it glows, it is pulling just barely enough current to cause the gas valve to open. A new ignitor should take care of the problem.

When I first turn on the oven I can smell gas. This just started so I don't that it is a leak at a gas line connection poin. It must have something to do with an internal valve.

Have the Glow bar ignition, thermocouple and gas regulator valve checked. It is not un-common for some gas smell as the Glowbar heats the thermocouple bulb.
This in turn when reaching the correct temperature activates the gas regulator. If the Glow bar is not providing ignition quick enough. More gas can be released before combustion is initiated. This extra can be the smell you are experiencing now.

Best to have the unit serviced by a qualified technician to be safe.

Good luck Luck be safe!

Oven does not light

first check the igniter to see the color of it. if it is orange you need to replace it because it is too weak to ignite. it needs to glow white hot. second, the burning smell could be from the coil, check the coils as well near the gas valve.

My kenmore gas oven won't heat. I turn to dial to temp i want can smell gas building up in oven and can see a glow in bottom of oven but will not ignite. Sometimes if I turn on a cooking eye I can then...

When the bake igniter becomes weak or burns out, your oven would not bake. The bake igniter is usually mounted on the oven burner. It's about 1 inch by 4-8 inches (depending on the model), and comes in round or flat styles. If you don't see the igniter glow at all, it's probably burned out. Replace the igniter if found defective. Note: one of the exceptions could be that your oven is set to automatic mode instead of manual. If this is the case, set your oven to manual mode and check again.

If the bake igniter glows red and not bright yellow or white, it is probably because it is too weak. When this happens, the safety valve would not let the gas out into the oven burner. A weak igniter must be replaced.

A faulty igniter is probably the most common cause, however there are others:

-- defective thermostat
-- defective selector switch
-- defective gas safety valve
-- defective gas valve coils

Oven takes 5 minutes to come on (ignite).

Replaced the igniter. The parts guy told me that the amperage changes with age and use; thus the igniter still glows, but it takes much longer to operate the gas valve with the reduced amperage. Cost - $70.14

MY BROIL ELEMENT WON'T IGNITE ON MY MGS5870ADW MATAG GAS RANGE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT PART TO ORDER. BACK ELEMENT OR IGNITER IS GLOWING RED.

It could be that the ignitor is weak and only partially heating which could be causing the gas control valve not to open and allowing the gas to flow into the broiler burner tube.

I would also suggest you see if you can smell gas to confirm that the gas supply valve is actually opening up. With the oven door closed, turn on the broiler and after 20-30 seconds of having the ignitor glowing red, turn off the broiler control and open the door and see if you can smell gas, if not it could be either a weak ignitor or a faulty gas control valve.

I would suggest that before you start ordering parts, you swap out the oven ignitor with the broiler ignitor to verify that the broiler ignitor is the problem. It could also be the broiler tube has a blockage of some sort possibly from cooking debris, that is preventing gas from flowing into the tube.

Here's a diagram for your unit along with the parts list.

Oven not working properly

I just solved this problem with my GE gas range. I waited forever for the oven to warm up. The igniter would glow, light the burner and burn for a minute or so and go out. It would repeat this process till oven reached operating temp, which took forever. Problem is in the igniter. It may be glowing, but it is not letting the gas valve stay open, because it is not hot enough to create resistance in it to keep gas valve open. I had replaced the thermostat thinking it was the problem. The good part about it was I could take it back because my buddy works at supply house. Once the igniter was replaced, the oven fired up and stayed lit till operating temp was reached. It will also hold the oven temp much better. Oh yea, the igniter will stay glowing while the burner is on. Hope this helps.
