After parking the car, went to start up next morning and it was making a ticking noise. Sounded like it was coming from alternator/starter motor. Car is a 2004 Ford XR6 BA Falcon

ticking if external component like alternator / pulleys can be bearings or debris --internal ticking usually oil starved valve train or loose rocker arm --as to oil starve check oil pressure and flow sludge or worn oil can cause oil flow problems

How to tell if oil pump is starting to go out?

1. Engine Noise. With a bad oil pump sufficient engine oil will not get to all parts of the engine, especially the top end, and you will get engine noise with metal parts that would normally be lubricated and quiet knocking due to metal to metal contact. Engines with hydraulic lifters that become noisy can be a sign that they have insufficient oil supply. In addition to the hydraulic lifters, your valve train may begin to make noise if your oil pump begins to fail. Valve train components need to be properly lubricated as well. A bad oil pump can result in a lot of additional noise from your valve train system.

2. Higher engine temperature. Poor lubrication because of poor oil flow generated from the pump will cause friction in the engine and the engine temperature will rise. Good oil flow is essential for lubrication and reducing friction to a minimum.

3. Low oil pressure. The oil pump generates oil flow through the engine but tolerances between metal parts produce the oil pressure. Very worn engine bearings will result in low oil pressure. Thus a worn engine will have low oil pressure even though the oil pump may be fine and there is no issue with the oil pressure relief valve either. However you will also experience low oil pressure due to a failing oil pump because poor oil flow will also result in lower oil pressure.

If your oil pressure warning light has been triggered in your engine, the causes of the low pressure need to be properly investigated because the problem may not be with the oil pump. People replace oil pumps assuming that is always the problem and then still have low oil pressure because the pump was not the problem to begin with.

I have a 1987 Razz and oil is leaking into the carb when it sits. Could it be the oil check valve on the side of the carb?

I am having the same problem. Scooter is off and oil is still flowing into the carb flooding the crank case. Which i already flushed out. Any one have an idea on whats wrong?

Oil flow diagram: plugged galley?

you have spun a crank bearing. oil goes from pump to main bearings, rod bearings then to cam and valve train.

Yes i have a 2000 ford excursion it doesnt have 100,000 miles on yet but when you start it up it blopws out blue smoke what could be causing it

This is usually a sign of worn valve guides..

The engine warms up.. the oil thins.. and the head has oil flowing around the valve train..

You shut it off..the oil leaks past the valve guides into the cylinder..

Next time you fire it up..it burns off.. the process then begins anew.

It's not really hurting anything.. just keep an eye on consumption and add oil as needed.

At some point it will need to be addressed.. cause all leaks..never get better.

Best of luck!

Do you people think that a valve set is needed every 25,000 kms. sure there is going to be wear and tear in the valve train, but is it that great. this again is on a 06 stratoliner. thanks for your imput...

I would think the valve set should last at least 100,000 km (60,000 miles minimum) would be in order. You should not have a problem like that unless your using bad/cheap oil or fuel with too much ethanol. Use only JASO MA rated motorcycle oil.

Yamaha dt 125r power valve

Your barrel? LOL. Sounds like the valves need to be gone through. I would suggest taking and valve train apart and put it back together correctly then go from there.
