SOURCE: can't receive fax but can send
Call your cell phone from the fax machine and check the caller ID to make sure that it is the correct number for your fax machine. Next, call the fax machine from you cell phone, and make sure the fax machine rings. Problems like these are almost always a phone line issue, not the machine.

paper jam error codes rely on input from sensors in the paper path. On this machine there is 1 sensor that is triggered by a mechanical actuator on the cartridge. Actually, the cartridge is generic, except for the position of this actuator. It is part of the guard that prevents damage to the drum, when it is removed from the machine. The positon of the actuator is different in the case of 4 different manufacturers who use this engine. Now, the effect of this actuator is to tell the machine that a cartridge is actually present in the machine. Now, some cartridge re manufacturers have removed this actuator entirely and technicians will jam the sensor in the machine with gum or a piece of paper to allow the use of this generic cartidge. Unfortunately, the paper path becomes obstructed, not with paper, but by the media that the technician has used to de activate the sensor. Look for this and replace the media with something more robust that will not become dislodged.

I was able to resolve the same issue with an HP M1522nf MFP (multifunction) unit by changing the "Fax Speed" option from V.34 down to V.17. Although this option is under the "Every Outbound Fax" menu, it appears to have resolved the problem with inbound faxes.
Outbound faxes were never a problem. However, "No Fax Detected" and Comm Errors of every sort were previously gotten on about two out of every three inbound faxes.
