The car is building up water pressure. water circulation doesn't seem a problem. Temprature seems to fluxuate. No sign of water and oil mixing anywhere.

Engine oil mixing into coolant

The only place, oil and water share a gasket is the cylinder head gasket, oil and water galleries run through the engine block and head via the head gasket. The cylinder pressure will be OK, it's the oil pressure that's putting the oil in the coolant, the gasket has gone between the water and oil galleries or there is an internal crack (unlikely). A coolant pressure test should show it up.

From what you describe, it sounds like your water pump is not circulating the water. But it doesn't sound like you have a blown head gasket or a cracked block at this point. But if you continue to drive the car, that could change.

Do you seem to have good circulation through the radiator normal? Sometimes, the radiator will get gunked up, and then very little coolant can get through it. Which is a possibility, but I would still suspect the water pump first.

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.

Coolant pressure build up not circulating

Definately sounds like a head gasket, which is allowing compression into the cooling system.
