I
have a Dell 1545 with Dell web cam central & I've had this issue.
The problem is that Dell web cam central installs it's own microphone
settings onto your laptop called something like Dell web cam Live!. This
isn't the built in microphone in my laptop & maybe not yours
either. You have to change the settings for your computer system &
Dell web cam central. Go to start> control panel> sound>
recording .. on mine there is an option for Microphone "High Definition
Audio Device" ... that is the built in mic. You want that for your
default & apply it. Then open Dell web cam central & go to the
"Record Video's" option. In the middle of this is an orange button with a
video camera icon. Next to this on the same button is a little arrow
pointing down .. click that. Under microphone .. choose Microphone "High
Definition Audio Device" just like the sound option in control panel.
I've done this & it's completely fixed. I can record videos with
sound & use my built in mic in voice/video chat.

Im not sure I understood exactly the issue but the solutions are more than one ... you may just uninstall the web cam ...and set the mic you want to use and after that reinstall the web cam ...and you have every chances to be installed and the external mic to remain in use.. or ...to use the mic from the external pink entry of the pc ...just select it from the sound driver ...options.. in your capture program you might also have the choice for which mic to use .... in your yahoo messenger for example you have this choice on preferences /audio device.... you also may find on your control panel ...sound and audio device /audio../and for the sound recording audio device ...select the one you want... good luck !
double click on the microphone volume thing at the bottom right of your start menu bar, that should bring up your volume levels, make sure the mic isn't muted. Also check to see if there are any microphone cables to plug into your soundcard. It's also possible it's just a webcam and doesn't have a microphone with it.

Go to Control Panel and Click on Sounds,
Click on Audio, then Click on the Microphone. Then Click on
the drop down and select Camera Microphone.
Click OK and it should work.
Hope this helps. Bud
