If you not get a timeout or another error means the Ethernet connection of the board is gone. When connected the cables you see lights near the jack or have the same response as above means the Ethernet interface is working, but have physical damage and cannot interface with the pc. In that case the better option is for add a Ethernet card to the PC. USB or PCI card no matter.
