I thought of a completely different way of getting the stuck anode rod out. I'm a little old lady with not much power so had to think outside the box. I used a car jack wedged horizontally on a wall stud to slowly apply torque to the breaker bar. At first there wasn't enough room to fit the jack so I took a long 2×4 and started farther away from the breaker bar. I wedged in pieces of wood as needed and moved the jack closer and closer to the bar, always putting it on a stud. Finally I had the jack on the breaker bar itself and it came loose!! The whole process took me about 15 minutes of patient work.

I've run in to quite a few of those the last 2 or 3 seasons, so they sure aren't fun. The odd time I have got real lucky by putting threaded plug back in, and tightening it real tight, then taking it back out and the anode took a bite to plug again and came out. Last few I did, basically had to tap it in slightly, carefully, so as not to let is drop in tank and then not be able to retrieve it. If the wire (like coat hanger size) , is still sticking out where you can get a good grip with a small pair of vise grips, then try that, and try wiggling it slightly as you pull. Last one wouldn't come even then, so I took a small drift punch and tapped wire in center, back toward tank an inch or 2, which left me a hole approx 1/8", so I threaded in a long bigger diameter screw that took a good bite to the soft metal zinc anode, then tried pulling on that as well while wiggling. Still wouldn't come, so I tapped it inward slowly, making sure I still had good grip with vise grips on screw head. Kept going in a little, then pull out a little each time as well. This one actually had to go in until it cleared opening in tank, ( didn't want that, but that was the idea of long screw, so I still had a grip on it.) but I still had hold of screw head attached and it wiggled right back out through hole after that. Most times at worst it would only have to go in about 1/2", then a good pull and some wiggling would get it out, but last one was a close call. Hope this is of some help. If explanation not clear enough, feel free to reply and ask more questions. If /when you get it out, let me know how it goes will ya?

Check anode rod

There is a large nut on the top of the heater. Shut off the burner, shut off the water, unscrew the cap and remove it, you should see a long rod attached to the cap. This is the anode and it is designed to be consumed by the water minerals in order to prolong the life of the tank in the heater. If it is consumed, you can replace it.

Why is there a bad odor from my 19.9 gallon reliance electric hot water heater

Anode rod?
Replace anode rod, or remove anode rod, and clean tank with hydrogen peroxide (not bleach)
Anode will keep tank from rusting.
Cut new anode rod to correct length using hack saw.

GPS-75-200 anode replacement

The anode is located under the power vent.
Remove power vent to gain access.
Otherwise, remove Hot water nipple and install combo anode rod. If odor is the reason for replacement, then installing a combo without removing the old anode will not solve odor problem until old anode completely dissolves over time.
Copy following link for specific information and illustrations, including odor elimination using hydrogen peroxide.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

For easy access next time, you can remove old anode and plug hole, and then install combo rod.
If longevity of tank is reason you are accessing the anode, you can add a second combo anode in addition to the original anode and give longer protection

Where is anode located mdel no. 82yp30-1

Question posted under Rheem water heater.
Model number does not describe water heater.
Model number posted in question does not appear at Rheem, and does not appear in a web search for water heaters.
Here are options:

1) Add a comment and describe water heater in detail so expert can access more information

2) Contact Rheem.
http://www.rheem.com/Contact.aspx

3) If this is tank-type water heater, the anode is located on top of heater.
Look for 1-1/6" hex nut located under a plastic plug.
Some anode rods are connected to the hot-water nipple.
Sometimes the top cover has to be removed to find anode hex nut.
I have used impact wrench on anode, and could not remove in some cases.

Annual maintenance for Rheem water heaters calls for removing and checking the anode rod. After some searching I found a 6-point 1-1/16 socket, but I can't turn the anode rod. Applying more leverage...

PROBABLY. THE ANODE PROBABLY FUSED ITSELF TO THE TANK VIA ELECTROLYSIS. I WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT INSPECTING THE ANODE ROD UNLESS U LIVE IN AN AREA OF HARD WATER AND/OR THE UNIT IS OVER 5 YEARS OLD. DRAINING AND FLUSHING THE WATER HEATER TWICE A YEAR WILL HELP KEEP THE UNIT PERFORMING LONGER. ADDING A WATER HEATER BLANKET WILL HELP LOWER UR UTILITY BILL AS WELL.IF U FEEL U MUST HAVE AN ANODE IN UR TANK, ANY RV DEALER HAVE ANODES FOR A SUBURBAN WATER HEATER THAT U CAN ADAPT AND THREAD INTO THE DRAIN PORT OF UR WATER HEATER.

Atwood heater problems

The smell is from the (anode rod not sure of this term is exact) in the water hater. Smells like rotten eggs. You have to remove the rod in the top of the water heater. This will void the warranty of the heater. The soot is due to flame adjustment. this should be done by a professional.

Have you removed the anode rod to check it? They dissolve over time and have to be replaced.
