Kirby Heritage 84

I can't figure out how to get the belt engaged on my Kirby Heritage 84. There are very simple instructions on the front assembly; however, the belt doesn't engage with the rotor, and the beater bar does not spin. When I have the front twisting section on the "Belt On" setting, it seems as though it actually disengages the belt. I see no faults in any of the mechanical parts, but just can't get the belt to go on the rotor.

(I purchased this machine @ a garage sale on Saturday. It's in perfect condition.)
My vacuum cleaner is a Kirby 84 Legend.

Help!

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. You can always check your owner’s manual but the Kirby has a dial on the front of the machine and you needs to dial the belt off of the fan pulley counter clock wise and to check to see if the Kirby bell housing will release @ the top so that you can remove the bell housing. If not then remove the bottom plate and take out the brushroll on one side and then slide the belt off of the brushroll. Then you can slide the new belt onto the brushroll to the center and then re-insert the Kirby brushroll with the screw heads facing downward then you can replace the bottom plate – then use the Kirby spoon or hook to dial the belt onto the fan pulley clock wise. Once that is done then plug in the Kirby and try to vacuum to see if the Kirby is picking up properly, if not repeat the process. If you have a question, feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I have a Kirby Heritage 84. Great condition except the part that connects the innerbag is missing. I don't even know what it is called. I can open the vacuum cleaner bottom and see that the part is...

The Heritage 84 had two different bag assemblies available. One is a dump-out bag. The dirt simply dumps through the bottom. The other is the bagged style which has a full length zipper to open it. Inside it should contain a "bag fill tube", and a top adapter to attach the bag onto. The oval fill tube is no longer available, but a round tube can be installed with a bit of efort.

How do you reattach the front end of a Kirby Heritage II vacuum cleaner so that the brush is engaged. ( Manual missing!)

you need to make sure the belt is on the roller correcty, make sure is at the red position when putting the part back on with the belt on the hook, push the pedal to highest (off the ground) position to ensure you put it on correctly, then turn the fixing clip thing to secure it, then once its on turn the panel around to green position, belt will be back on, once you get used to it you'll be ok,

Is there a drive belt on the heritage 84

Yes it has a belt. Could be the belt or a worn out brush roller, or you don't have the height adjustment set right. But I would check the belt first. It is the cheapest part and if you haven't changed it lately it probably needs it anyhow.

If you haven't changed the belt before it's a little tricky.

Turn the knob on the front to the belt off position, and unlatch the top of the nozzle to remove it. Pull the nozzle off and turn the knob to the belt on position. Take off the bottom plate and take out the old brush roller and belt. Pay special attention to how the roller comes out. You don't want to get it in backward.

Put the new belt on the roller and center it. Put the roller back into the nozzle and put the bottom plate back on. Turn the knob to the belt off position you should be able to see through the hole in the back, the hook pick up the belt and stretch in up.

Put the nozzle back on the unit, latch the top, and turn the knob to the belt on position. Simple Right? LOL

It has to be one of the most complicated machines to change a belt on .

P.S. they usually give you extra belt when you buy it, and the new style knurled belts work fine as well.

Good Luck-Don't be afraid to ask another question if that doesn't solve your problem.

Using accessories on a Kirby Heritage 84

my guess with your kirby is the safety switch on the right side of your vacuum is not being pressed down, are you sure you have the right model of hose? any Heritage 1 2 or Legend 2 can work with it since they all have the same switch. your carpet head is working from the sound of it so either it's just that the high speed switch (being pressed fully down) doesn't work or you are not using the right type of hose (or the piece that engages the switch could be broken off

the above link shows you how to change the belt on the g-series kirbys but it will apply to the heritage edition as well...the only difference is the color...some of the arrows may be missing on the front belt lifter knob...but they are little differences...

hope this helps!!!
