Ok, so looks like the on/off switch is buggered in my kettle and while attempting to get the bottom off to fix it I came across I strange screw? that I can't get off (assuming it was designed this way) Any ideas how to get it off? BTW, I have no manual and no warranty.

The_donalds,

There is a slotted screw with a weird divider in the middle of the slot. I managed to twist it up with scissors, with the blades straddling the divider; then used pliers to get it open.

Your problem may be an incomplete circuit, which needs to be visually checked. Also, there are two screws that come loose easily, thereby blocking the circuit from completing when you push down on the on button. If this is your problem, you can just unbugger the screws, and leave em out.

To remove the weird screw, you need a special screw-driver. You can make one. Take one of your old slot screw-drivers that looks like the right size and thickness, place it upside down in a vice or vise-grip, then cut a notch in the blade with a hack-saw. Use a thin angle file to widen the notch slightly. Presto, you can now easily remove the anti-tampering screw.
