Is the Drive detected in the BIOS? Can you boot from your Windows or any bootable disc? If so try this solution:
Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)
Find
"UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak"
"LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the
registry, and delete it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Quit Registry Editor.
Reboot.
NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

Hmm.. Yea Compaq was pretty tight in not providing a XP disc, um ill provide a link so you can download the HP drivers suited to your laptop and this may fix the problem in itself. If this fails, you may need to just install a fresh OS, but its kinda a problem since you didnt get a disc. Its a good idea anyway to also call HP if its under warranty cause it sounds like a case that warranty should fix up
XP Drivers Link
SO what i would do is pretty much install all of those drivers, then if your still having trouble call HP and get a warranty job on it if you still have warranty

Please buy new CD/DVD drive since it wont open you cant event check using media. Its a possible mechanical failure.

Remove the sound card driver from your computer and then install it back after the computer restart. Check your volume settings and the volume slider on your laptop.
