This problem is intermitten. Kenmore 665 16765690. starting the dishwasher, I hear a motor running. I think it is trying to empty water, however there isn't any water. I will turn the time rotor around to the start again. Sometimes, when I do this the motor running sound has stopped and I hear gurgling sound of water entering. Once this happens, the cycle is good and does well. However, there are times, rotation the timer back to the beginning may take several times, up to about 20 times. It seems now, that this isn't working. I think it is related to the machine thinking it still has water in the tub. Which seems like a sensing device, microswitch or float switch. Just guessing. Thank you for listening.

Check under the sink and make sure it is not shut off there. If there is water pressure to the unit then you could have a sticky inlet valve, no power to solenoid on that valve or a bad solenoid, a sticky overfill valve or a bad control board.
It is likely the sound you are hearing is that of the pump motor which is triggered because the flood switch has been triggered. This means the dishwasher is trying to empty itself to avoid damage likely casued by water leak. You need to find out why the flood switch is triggered. It would be helpful if you provide the model number of the dishwasher.
When I start a new cycle, I first hear the pump run to empty out all
remaining water, and after that I hear the motor run for the regular
washing cycle, but there is no water in the dishwasher. After a few
minutes, the cycle stops, and the washer claims the dishes are 'clean'.
When I try starting a new cycle over and over again, about one in 20
times, the cycle will run normally with water. But then the next time,
the problem starts all over again. Once a cycle starts correctly,
everything works fine, including the rinsing.
usually when you start the dishwasher, you should hear the inlet water valve operate and let water in. The wash motor cuts in much later. If you do not hear the motor but everything else seems to be ok then the motor has burnt out. But if you hear nothing once you press the start button, then it is likely the cycle is not starting as the door is not locked. This could mean either the door switch is faulty or the latch is not engaging the door switch. It might help to please clarify the situation as above and also provide model number of dishwasher.
Hey Steve,Sorry it took me so long to answer i was offline and my add is not supposed to displayed when i am off line so sorry about that. Now then on that dishwasher with the hum and no water circulation it sounds as if the main wash motor is jammed up for some reason it could be that the motor itself is defective or as simple as something such a piece of debris such as broken glass or almost anything caught in the motor causing it to not turn on,by disassembling the wash motor you can see if something is caught in,if nothing is caught in its a (sorry to say) the motor itself thats bad and would need to replaced. The reason the water drains even though it will not circulate is because of the separate drain pump that is working Please reply back after disassembling the pump to check for debris if ya need further assistance. Thanks for using Fixya.Com,GENE
hi the larger motor housing underneath the unit is what moves the water around to wash, the smaller pump is the drain pump, if you don't hear that running it is likely in need of replacement. check your paper work for warranty, if it's out of warranty try to find a deal online and it's relatively easy to replace
what your friend did would not affect the appliance. by the sound of it the main circulating pump or pump capacitor is faulty. capacitor is a cheap part but the pump will be expensive. only way to find out is to dive in and look. is pump motor is faulty then this will be faily obvious - burnt winding. if no apparant motor damage try substituting the motor capacitor - this is a cheap part
