SOURCE: My Garmin Etrex wont turn on on batteries but it works fine on external usb power.
I have the same problem. The unit works until I connect it to whatever computer via USB (Mac or PC). The screen blanks out as soon as I plug in the USB cable. I have to disconnect the device and only then I am able to turn it on again. That started after Firmware update from V 2.90 to 3.00 . I am not sure this is causing problem. What about the firmware versions of your devices ? Are they all on the latest ?
However, does anybody know if there is a way to go back to firmware version 2.9 if it is not possible anymore to connect the device to any computer (evtl. through putting data on the microSD card ?).
Thanks,
Martin

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.
Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.

I have an older Garmin 12XL and suddenly the screen turned very dark. I tried replacing the batteries and let the GPS rest for a week so the internal lithium battery could re-charge. But that did not work. I just got an email from a friend who had the same problem... it turned out that his unit had changed the screen contrast setting all by its' self.
This may not be the cause of your problem but it's worth trying... go into your "Settings" menu and reset the contrast and see if that cures the problem. Good luck.
Yes, have you enabled WAAS on your 60CSx? WAAS is an acronym for Wide Area Augmentation System, according to the instruction manual an FAA funded service to improve overall integrity of the GPS signal through North America.
If you are in an area which is not serviced by ground stations, having WAAS enabled may degrade the signal from the GPS satellites. Try enabling or disabling this feature.
To do so, acess the System Startup Page. On the Setup Menu page, highlight the System icon and press Enter. WAAS is the second available setting on this page.
Make sure your batteries are fresh; I prefer alkalines in this model. Set the battery type in the System Setup Page, same page as noted for WAAS above.
Another thought is to be sure you have the latest Garmin software installed. Visit their site to download the latest and greatest, free, of course.
