Excellent solution. Turned out to be bad contacts on speaker unit. Connections appeared to be in firm contact, but had to be flexed, pushed and prodded to make work. Got signal from head phone jack and proved amp was working. Connected small pc speaker to output contact and got signal. Therefore had to be speaker or speaker contact. Have also had considerable problems with various components, cd, tape deck, and tuner acting in erratic fashion. Turned out caused by seemingly good ribbon cable contacts not working due to corrosion or dust, which is not visually apparent. Strong contact cleaner would be good solution, but not readily available in England.
