Excellent solution. Turned out to be bad contacts on speaker unit. Connections appeared to be in firm contact, but had to be flexed, pushed and prodded to make work. Got signal from head phone jack and proved amp was working. Connected small pc speaker to output contact and got signal. Therefore had to be speaker or speaker contact. Have also had considerable problems with various components, cd, tape deck, and tuner acting in erratic fashion. Turned out caused by seemingly good ribbon cable contacts not working due to corrosion or dust, which is not visually apparent. Strong contact cleaner would be good solution, but not readily available in England.

Please bring a good contact cleaner from radio shack near you and apply the spray over the socket of the headphone(the place where you put your headphone jack)take headphone jack out and apply spray in and insert the jack in and out many times.-also check your system setup and confirm that all speaker are on- no mute button pressed-no cable is disconnected.

VSX504S volume has become very soft

soft meaning - barely audible? in that case either u have a defective loudspeaker or a defective audio power amp section. I suspect the latter, so what i suggest is - get it checked. U could try opening it up urself and mess with it if u plan to buy a new one :-)

First, turn down the volume on the reciever. Next make sure that "tape monitor" has not been selected. If that doesn't do it, it will be time for a shop visit...accordianman
