Panasonic home theater sound system SC-HT720 won't read or play dvds or cds

When we put in the CDs or DVDs into our player the machine will not "read" the item as it should. Instead, it appears to be trying to read the DVD/CD but all that we hear is a clicking noise and instead of saying "reading" we see is a dashed horizontal line on the DVD/CD player display. The display on the television flickers on and off. Please help.

I am having the same exact problem. I called Panasonic and they were no help at all. They suggested buying a new one. I am also looking for an inexpensive solution.

Are they new CD and DVDs or copies. If they are burned copies then you can still play them but you need to do a work around.

Mine does the same.the display flashes "prog" and --:-- on cd's,dvd's and even the cleaning disk it almost sounds like it isn't getting enough power to spin the disk.

My sharp blu ray player no longer plays blu rays

If it plays CDs and DVDs but not BluRays at all, then the blue laser is burned out. CDs and DVDs use a different laser. A needed firmware update would not prevent it from reading a BluRay.

I got an Sony HCD S 300 Home Theater set recently. As I put in dvds and cds for playing, the dvd player says NO DISK. Thinking it is because it is not a original dvd it isn't working, I put another DVD...

It could be down to the Region of the Player or the Laser is Failing. As it doesn't play CDs then I suspect the the Laser is Failing (almost failed if it plays a cleaner but not CDs).

The surround sound is working with dvds and cds but not with tv

Did you try hitting the Doby Digital button? That is supposed to produce "fake" surround sound from sources which don't have surround sound like a tv.
