First check the battery for full charge.
This may be a damaged lens system.
Lens error is usually E18 or text "lens error" or other error message.

What you both can try is something I have tried and fixed some cameras.
As the camera starts, gently push in on the lens or pull..that may be able to be determined by the way the lens acts. You have to study carefully the lens as it is extending to see what happens.
If any noise is present as it is extending, then you may have internal parts which are broken in the lens. Sell it for parts on a site such as Ebay. List it as is, parts, or repair.
take care,

DSC W80 Error Message - Zoom and Picture Doesn't work

There is something blocking the sensors for the lens position. This can something as small as a piece of sand. The motors and gears that move the lens are very small and delicate. You can send it in for repairs to www.unitedcamera.com

Camera lens won't shut

This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canons), "ACCESS" error (Sony), "Zoom Error" (Fuji), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (nearly all camera makers lately use this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move.

My zoom will not come out, just clicks trying to come out.

Stuck zoom is the most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error", or "lens error, restart camera". Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move.
The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended.
A camera owner that suffers this problem may have no recourse for having the camera repaired. Many camera makers will not honor repairing this problem under warranty as they claim it is due to impact damage to the camera, or sand or debris getting into the lens gearing mechanism (neither of which is covered under warranty). The quoted repair cost is usually close to or more than what the camera is actually worth.
This part can be easily replaced in most cameras.

Camera says

Hi there just like to informed you that 2 reason can make a noise.
1. low or old battery's using.
Solution: replace it if too old or charged it fully.

2. Lens error. Internal lens guide pin if damaged then the camera goes off with bad noise.

Solution: repair or replaced the lens guide pin.
Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

My EX-S5 says lense error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
