RAM problem Hi, Today I upgraded my RAM from 512MB to 1GB for Sony Vaio pcg-k45 and when I went to look at the my computer properties it still says 448MB of RAM. However, in the System Information it says I have 1GB of Memory. What's my next step?

Same problem here. Installed TWO same 512M PC2700 but only 512M available(including video memory). If installed one 512M, only 256M reported. Tried compurepair's solution, not working. By spec it was shipped with 512M PC2100, but my one was shipped with two hynix 256M PC2700. Any idea?

I have sony vai pcg k12p model with 512mb ram . It has 2 slots which has 256mb each. I went to crucial.com and looked for upgrades and oredered two 512 mb ram (PNY pc 2700 DDR 333mhz) which was suggested by the
website. I installed both of them and it detects 512mb only (256 in each)

I cheked in the bios setup and it has only 448m ram . how can i solve the probelm?

I upgraded the ram from 2x256M to 2x512 last week with the same problem, (I got the RAM from FRY's and returned it). I tried F10 and other suggestions posted without any sucess.

I ordered one 512K RAM from meomorystock on line at first time ($27.95) and installed 2 days ago. The system Information detected it right away. It worked fine and I took the chance to order the second RAM.

I got it and installed it just now and the VAIO system Information detected 1GB without doing anything. The windows control panel detected 960 MB.

So, I think the root problem is the compatibility of RAM with PCG-K45.

I did not upgrade the BIOS as suggested in some discussion.

I upgraded my vaio PCG-K45 to 1GB (2 x 512 MB). Speed seems to be improved now. But when I go to "My computer" properties and check the RAM there, it still shows 448 MB.

Also I checked in "System Information" using vaio control panel, there also it says 512 MB. So would I know whether my laptop is really upgraded?Alos how can I check BIOS setup (as mentioned in several forum)?

    Regards

Hello, if you have an intel m processor for your sony then u are somewaht out of luck. the base memory is 256 megs and it is not in the motherboard but rather integrated in one of the slots itself, that means if u put a 512 mb chip into that certain slot it will only read 256. a lot of people are mislead into thinking they can put two 512s and get a gig of memory, but not true, at least not with most of the sony intel processors. find the base slot by switching chips around, then leave the 256mb chip there. then u can add a 512mb to the expandable slot and get over 700bytes. if u can find a 1gb compatible stick, then try that the same way, leave the original hynix base slot chip in and add the 1gb, if u can find one, then u will have a little over 1280 of which u can up the video graphic usage up to 128 in the bios, and have your 1gb in memory. if u find a 1gb memory chip that work, drop a line as to what brand and size u used

Hi,
There is no next step.
boot into the laptops bios setup. to see if the memory is registering as 1 gig or 500mb.
Also check if applicable, that both memory channels are enabled.
if you have Sony system information software installed try using that instead. Vaios do tend to have RAM slot issues. So the ram slot itself may be giving a false reading.
I,d remove the power and Battery. remove the newly installed Ram. And reseat it. pushing Inwards as well as downwards upon installation. Also check the Ram are a matched pair. Voltage and specifications on memory and Vaios are essential.

I have a vgn-b3vp (pcg-5b1m) sony laptop, can i upgrade the memory if it has 512 of none-removable memory and only 1 bank.

Yes, you can use the 1 bank and get higher graded memory, another 512 in the 1 bank would make 1gig, you can probable get as much as 2 gig in the bank to make a total of 2.5 gigs by buying a 2 gig memory stick.

I am trying to install new RAM on my mother's Sony VAIO PCG-K25 laptop. It had two slots, each with 256MB sticks in them. I replaced these with 512MB sticks, and the computer wouldn't boot. It wouldn't...

make sure they are compatible with your computer, there are alot of electronic stores (circuit city) was the worst at it, but will sell you the wrong ones and say they are backwards compatible.. usually P4 2.8 can run PC2700, some run PC2100, which im hoping yours is PC2700... if so, make sure they are NON-ECC also... i would just get 2 1 gig PC2700 DDR 200pin sticks and stick em in... good luck

I want to upgrade my ram what type of ram should i use and how what is the maximum amount of ram i can upgrade to?

Hi,
Memory Upgrade for Sony VAIO PCG-K35 Laptop, the Sony VAIO PCG-K35 Laptop takes the PC2100 DDR SDRAM SODIMMs Memory Type, and comes installed with 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB (removable) of Memory. You can upgrade your Sony VAIO PCG-K35 Laptop to up to a maximum of 1.0 GB Memory, the system has 2 sockets to install Memory, already with 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB (removable) standard Memory installed. For best Laptop performance use the maximum amount of allowed Memory per slot for your Laptop.

Not recognizing new memory

Take them back out and re-seat them and try again. THe "Retailer" can very well be wrong. You may also need to tell the bios you upgraded, however that is highly unlikely. THe computer may not be able to handle 1gb of ram also, but thats unlikely also. I say it may all lead down to a bad stick of memory you bought from your "retailer"
