Yes. The CCD chip has died and they don't tend to be cheap, but I would call around to other service centers before giving up hope. $400 seems a little steep to me, but I don't often work with Pentax units, and haven't priced their CCDs recently.

Are you saying that on the same card, you are able to view other pictures you took but new pictures appear black? (or is this happening on different cards?)

My iST DL has stopped transfer of pictures to SD cards. Have tried many that work in other cameras. All I get is a black image. The recording light flickers as though it is actually transferring image...

PLease reinstall the software and drivers for your camera, and try to transfer pictures again.

Blotches on images especially images with a light background eg.

This is probably due to dust or other foreign matter on the CCD. Look at the Pentax *ist DL manual under "CCD cleaning" or "sensor cleaning" for instructions.

There is a "sensor cleaning" mode in the Set-up menu that will lock the mirror up so you can inspect/clean the CCD sensor.

Lens cap off but pictures all black. Tested another SD card same thing happens. Black on review on camera and black when put SD card in computer. Camera a few years old and never had a problem before....

Is this a Canon ? If it is, you need to call Canon. You might have a CCD sensor failure.

Take a look at http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-digital-cameras-showing-black.html

If it is not a canon (You do not mention the brand) you are still best to contact the vendor. CCD failures can happen accross the board.

If the lens is a removable SLR type, take of the lens and take a photo. Does the mirror flip up at all and expose the CCD ?

Use "exposure compensation" (the button with a plus/minus symbol). It allows you to lighten (toward the + side) or darken (toward the - side).

AV error whn pentax ist DL & Quantaray zoom lens attached

I've got the same problem. The problem is that the lense is loosely attached to the body. What you need to do is that when you see the Av flashing, press the lense of the camera to the body and twist the lense to the left a bit. This tightens the connection. You can then take the photo.

Flash won't work

Try in custom menu I think. Switch shutter release whilst charging firmware switch whilst flash charging a couple of times. Had sinilar thing with ist DS after firmware update.

Remove the lens and fire off a few shots while looking inside. Does the mirror seem to work ok? Is the shutter actually opening revealing the sensor?

mirror and shutter are working fine...taking pictures with lens off the camera after totally blowing the card reader out 5 or 6 times, with compressed air, got 20 good pictures so far out of 50, will try to keep blowing out card reader and see what I come up with.
