Causes:

1. DVD has lots of scratches
2. Regional Settings
3. Incorrect DVD settings for PS2
4. No/Incorrect Disc

Remedy:

1. Clean your discs well and avoid incurring scratches. Place it in
its box after use.
2. DVDs have encoding. They are encoded by regions. Thus, you cannot
play region 2 DVDs on a US Playstation mainly because the US
Playstation 2 can only read DVD that are encoded in Region 1 or
those DVDs that are encoded for all regions. Again, US PS2 are
region 1 capable. Japanese PS2s are Region 2 Capable.
3. There are a number of settings for the DVD playback of your
PS2. First is the rating of the DVD. If you want to watch a
rated R movie, make sure your PS2 allows viewing of R movies.
You'll be setting this during the first time that you'll be
watching a DVD. It's just the same as real theaters. It is also
protected with password so you need the person who set it up
the first time in order to bypass the rating settings.
4. Put in a DVD first and make sure that it is a Movie. And,
check #2.

SOURCE: Our PS2 was dropped and now won't read disc

It looks as if your PS2 has died. I'm sorry to say, but since the firmware boots and it's just the disc error message, it lokos like a hardware error that is likely irreparable. This is the best "solution" i can give! please dont blame me! Just trying to help... but you can find great used ones for cheap now. Good Luck!

SOURCE: PS2 Slim Will Not Read Games

HI Pepper,

You need to try clenaing the Laser Lens. This is done by Using Q-tip and a window cleaner like Windex. Lightly Dampen one end of the Q-Tip and swab the lens with a slight bit of aggression. Use the Dry end of the swab to dry the lens. Try it out. Also you could have your laser gear popped out. look at the long worm gear to be sure it is stuck in the black holder. This should help you. In the unfortunate event it does not, you probably need a new laser. I do think you will get it working becasue you hear the Disc spinning. If the Laser was really dead, the disc would not spin as in it cannot tell the computer the laser sees a disc. Does the same thing as though no disc is in the drive bay. Contact me at [email protected] if you need service.

SOURCE: Disc won't spin. Disc doesn't show up in browser

You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem

  1. Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
  2. The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
  3. Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
  4. Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.

SOURCE: disc doesnt spin, ps2 slim

Does this problem apply to ALL of your discs? If not, then first, when putting your discs in the tray, be sure that ALL of the three PINS on the tray that holds the disc are locked in place, meaning they should all be sticking out on the hole of your DVD. This happened to me a lot...heheh...then, if this problem apply to all of your disc, There probably is a problem with the lens of your PS2...either slim or the fat one...then the only solution is to have your lens replaced...sorry, but i don't know how much it cost now...

PS2 Slim Disc Wont Spin

Sounds like the laser has gone out. The unit will not try to spin unless the laser can see the disc. A new laser can be picked up on ebay for less than $10

Ps 2 disc wont turn

I had this same issue with my PS2, honestly I think it was something to do with the laser eye reader that reads the disc, when it is dirty the disc won't even spin or attempt to read it.

you can either take an air compressor and when the ps2 is off, have the disc tray open and blow the dust out of it.

Or, i personally would take the ps2 apart and clean the diode itself with some rubbing alcohol. Just don't void your warranty or somehow break it.

This article will help you with disassembly: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/guides/2003/11/ps2-repair-guide.ars Hope this helps!

Disc read error

Disc Read Error generally means that the game disk cannot be read by your console.

Reasons for Disc Read Error
1. Disk surface scratched or smudged.
2. Disk surface dirty.
3. Lens surface dirty.

Here is what you can try doing.

1. Check the game disc for any scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth.

2. If the PS2 console is lying down, please set the console to on its side or if it's on its side set it to flat position, restart the console and then try game again. Always ensure the PlayStation 2 is in a cool, well ventilated place.

3. Remove and reinsert the Memory card of your PS2, restart the console then try running the game again.

Other troubleshooting that you can try.

Change the Disc speed of the PS2 DVD and then try again.

Start the PS2 with no disc in a drive. Press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Use the up and down buttons on the controller to select "Playstation Driver” and press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Select Disc speed. If it is set to "Fast," select "Standard"; if it is set to "Standard", select "Fast" and press the "X" button on the controller. Press the "O" button on the controller. Insert the game disc and restart the PS2. Try running the game again.

Turn the Diagnosis On for PlayStation2 to auto detect the best settings.

From the Browser and System Configuration menu. Press the triangle button to select Version. Highlight the Console from the list and press the triangle button - this accesses the next menu option. The Diagnosis will be highlighted. Press the X button to access the options available. Highlight "ON" and press the X button to affect the change. Restart the console and try the game again.

If the above steps does do not solve the error then you would probably have to replace the disc.

Note: If you are using the Slim version of PS2 make sure that the console is properly ventilated and that it should always be in the standing position, as the slim version of PS2 no fan or any other cooling unit unlike the normal PS2.
