The humidifier appears to be working (with sound ) but is not collecting any water-cleaned the filter and still the same -the lit up area where it usually has the numbers is sitting at P2- I have lost the manual so I don't what that means.

Alison -

A humidifier will not collect any water. A humidifier has a tank that you fill with water. The water is released / forced into dry air to make it moist, usually by a fan or ultrasonic method.

A dehumidifier has an empty tank that gets filled by the appliance extracting moisture from the air. The tank will have to be manually emptied periodically, otherwise the safety / water level switch will shut the unit off so that the tank doesn't over flow.

I suspect that you meant to say dehumidifier.. and if so, please provide the manufacturer's name and model. The "P2" indication will be difficult to interpret without knowing the manufacturer's info.

You are so right- dehumidifier---It is a Danby model # DDR2510E. thank you for any help in this matter.

Ok Alison - you're running a dehumidifier. Winter is approaching the northern hemisphere, and as a result, the air is significantly dryer than spring and summer. Most people run a humidifier at this time of year, but I don't know where you live or the conditions of the space you're running this appliance in.

Anyway, from the Danby Dehumidifier FAQ page:

My dehumidifier is not collecting water?

If the room air is less than the set air then there is no water in the bucket because there almost no humidity in the air. If it is winter there is likely not enough humidity in the air to have water collect in the bucket. A dehumidifier will only pick up humidity out of warm air. If you are running a dehumidifier in your basement in the winter, the room may be damp but too cold for the dehumidifier to pull out the humidity. Try running the unit in the bathroom after having a hot shower without the bathroom fan on. If working correctly the unit should draw water.

I have air-o-swiss humidifier. Recently I cleaned it. Its motor appears to be working after that but the mist is not coming out. Any clues?

When you cleaned it , did you remove water level sensor? If so did you put it back in upside down? The sensor is a plastic cylinder that is held down by a screw and washer.. If you have it in upside down, the empty water red light will be lit,,, if you unscrew the sensor and flip it .. it should start to work again..

I can't remove the grill above the fan so I can clean the blades

I have a Holmes cool-mist One-Touch Humidifier, and you can't reach the blades to clean them, and you can't take the console apart. I finally decided to use two spray bottles and clean and them rinse the Humidifer while holding the console upside down and over a sink. The one bottle you could fill with any mild cleaner plus a lot of water to dilute the cleaner. Maybe dishwashing liquid (not the dishwasher stuff), or a little bit of ammonia, or rubbing alcohol, or vinegar. Spray that on the blades while the machine is upside down, and a lot of sooty dirt drips out. Then rinse with another spray bottle full of plain water. Leave the console upside down on a towel to drip-dry. This is also how you can clean silk flowers that collect dust.

Humidifier not collecting water

To both, these sound like de-humidifiers. Is your goal to reduce humidity and dry your room?

If so, if the humidity is low, then the de-humidifier has no work to do. A cheap battery or dial humidistat will help.

If not, check for a clogged filter. No air moving spells no de-humidification.

Also check for a frozen evaporator coil. Same as above but this requires repairs.

Electric dehumidifiers are similar to refrigerators and window AC's. With the fan running, adjust the setting to a lower humidity setting until you hear the compressor kick in. If it does not even at the lowest setting, check the space relative humidity to make sure it has work to do. If it does, repairs may be as simple as cleaning electric contacts in controls or as bad as a refrigerant leak or compressor failure. If its bad, better to replace.

A humidifier adds moisture. If you have a humidifier and want to keep the static off your clothes and keep your nose from drying out, fill the tanks with water and add biocide.

Please do not view my comments as patronizing. Even seasoned engineers have difficulty grasping humidification.

Hunter humidifer

I dont know why your humidifier is spitting water out.

But it sounds like you need to clean the unit and install a new filter. Once the filter becomes used, the humidifier won't work as well. Less water will be used because the clogged filter can't hold as much. Once you replace the filter, your water consumption should go back up and you should feel a difference in your home again.

Good Luck.
