Re: Kenmore Top Freezer formed ice, main refrigerator area is not cooling Kenmore Top Freezer (Main refrigerator area) is not cooling; This trouble shooting has happened for the past year. Main refrigerator area was either too warm or too cold and now, is not cooling period. A ***** of ice has formed in rear of the ice box. I removed ice maker and rear panel. Behind the panel was the unit/part that houses the refrigerant inside the aluminum piping and louvers. Ice was caked on throughout it. I just defrosted and cleaned every thing out. Please walk me through the rest of this trouble shooting process.By the way, is there an online video that will do just that? Not easy to diagnose. the basic fault is that the defrost system has packed up.

check that there is continuity thro the defrost heater. there may also be a thermal fuse in series with the heater so check that also.

if those ok, then points to a fault in the main module

Ice forming in the top freezer, leaks in the bottom refrigerator section

Sounds like the defrost circuit of your fridge has failed. If you remove the back panel of the freezer compartment, you will see the evap coil encased with ice. Normally the defrost circuit will turn off the compressor and turn on a heater to warm the coil to about 45 degrees to melt any frost build up. After about 40 minutes the compressor will kick back in to keep your fridge cool again.

The typical failures are that the defrost heater burns out. If you have an older fridge, the defrost timer fails to advance, causing the fridge to stay in cooling or defrost mode.

Fridge is not cool

this is the problem of heater please replace it actually the matter is, behind the freezer panel there is a fan motor and behind it there is a coil in which the ice is formed. now the logic is, when the formation of ice increases then at that time the heater automatically defrost the ice this prevent from blockage of air pipe to the frizer.
