There is no "red string" on this specific model. Its really irritating that everyone is saying this when clearly no one can find a red string. Stop giving this advice. From what i can tell so far the release lever is inside the machine and to get to it you have to remove the front panel. My problem now is i cant get the top electronic panel off to get the front panel off... this machine is like a giant chinese handcuff!! I will never buy a maytag ever again!!

I successfully opened the door by removing the top panel, the control panel, then the front panel. Then pulled down Gently on the release lever. Wahla door released. Im still getting a FL code after i put it all back together but at least i rescued my clothes.

Look carefully in the inside front of the dispenser. You should see what looks like a red plastic string. (the type of string used on a power string trimmer) Pull on this string and the door should release.
