Did you have sound before?
If yes then follow this for xp:
Start/control panel/Sounds, Speech, & Audio Devices/Sound & Audio Devices. Is page greyed out? If yes then most likely its your sound card or on board sound, or your missing drivers.
If not greyed out go to "Sounds" tab, click on any "Program events" sound under Windows then click little black arrow next to browse on bottom right . Sound? If the arrow is greyed out then its the same; audio hardware device or audio driver.
If there is still no sound click on "Hardware" tab and first Sound, video and game controller then "properties". This will tell you under "Device status" if this device is working properly. Do this for each Sound, video ect.... selection in the list. I have found there are usually 6 listings. If not then you are most likely missing a sound driver.

Try plugging in a set of headphones into the green audio jack and see what happens.
