i'm no expert but i am having the same problem with the same series. after letting the battery die for several days of the screen turning on to the welcome screen it eventually just went on like normal. good luck.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll need to return your player for exchange or send it in for repair using the warranty. Have you contacted the Warranty/Customer Service dept. at RCA? Can you return the player? They sell them at Walmart, as well as other retailers in case you're not sure where it came from (Walmart will let you exchange it as long as all the original parts and packaging are there and you have a valid Driver's license).

Following your instructions and the instructions in the troubleshooting section for updating the firmware I got it to work.
Trouble shooting instructions:
If
your Player cannot be upgraded successfully, please try the following
troubleshooting steps:

If
you see the “Initializing…” message displayed for the Player for more than 5
minutes, please try the following steps:
1) Disconnect your Player.
2) Reset your Player by either
pressing the reset button or removing the AA-battery from the
Player.
3) While holding down the "Play" key
on your Player, connect it to the PC via the USB cable. Release the "Play" key
when you see the progress bar moving and "initializing" text. If you cannot see
the "initializing" text, please disconnect your Player and try
again.
4) Click the "Start" button to upgrade
your Player as described in the upgrade steps above.
