I have a Toshiba A305-S6898 laptop. When i power it up it runs but the monitor is black and you can't power it off. I took the battery out to shut it down. When I put the AC cord in I could power it up; blank screen again, and I couldn't power it off.

it is not a coin cell it is special rechargable battery.
if the PC keeps time of day ok in BIOS, best is leave it alone.
Sounds like the battery is shot. More than likely it isn't even holding a charge, or very little and just running straight off the plug. Best solution would be to find a replacement at one of your local ma and pa computer shops, always the best deals!
Problem description:
The laptop shuts off when AC power adapter is plugged in. The laptop
works fine on battery power but as soon as you connect it to AC adapter,
the laptop turns off. Possible cause:
1. Power adapter failure.
2. Motherboard failure. Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:
First of all, test the power adapter. Make sure the adapter outputs
correct voltage. It's possible that the output voltage is not correct
and the laptop shuts down to prevent the damage. Test your laptop with
another known good power adapter. Toshiba Satellite A305 AC Adapter
If the problem still exists, even after replacing the adapter, most
likely it's the motherboard failure. Replace the motherboard.
Heres a step-by-step guide on disassembling a Satellite A305. You should find access to the bios battery somewhere along the lines of this tutorial.
Remember to be very careful, and make sure to ground yourself or wear an anti-static wristband because the parts you're gonna be dealing with are very electrically sensitive.
When it goes to the blank screen, are you able to see the icons and such , like in the background? If so then the backlight on the screen has burned out. You could replace the screen relatively easily if you're technically inclined.
