I have a Winchester levewr action rifle, 1873, serial #99105A, I know the yaer it was made but need to know the model, could it be the 1873 saddle ring carbin?

need to know the model of Winchester rifle serial #99105A, 20" barrel, saddle ring. I know the production date so do not need that.

Thanks for your input. I know it is a model 1873 as it marked "Model 1873" on the tang that is in the top that goes into the stock. I also am aware that all 1873 models were not made in 1873. This has the top slide ejection feature, not side ejection. May look a little further per your suggestions.

Sorry for the way I posted this, what I really want is the style of the rifle, such as carbine or some other style. Thanks, John Alvey

The best way to find this out would be to take it to a Gun Dealer or search the Winchester site and find a match. It is usually stamped on the barrel but if that has worn off your best bet is a gun dealer. Unfortunately only Winchester or the federal government could tell you anything about it by the serial number. Very few people have that kind of access.

It may be a model 1873 but it wasn't made in 1873. You don't have enough information to locate the information you want because it can't be done from the Serial number except by the manufacture. with the knowledge it is a lever action with saddle ring it could be any of the Model 71 series that were produced as there were several variants. Because they reuse serial numbers between models it is going to be very difficult for anyone other than Winchester to assist you in figuring out the model. I personally have a Winchester Lever Action with Saddle ring hanging on my wall. It is a model 71 where it uses a side ejection port versus the top eject of the 1873 which is the only major difference. If we put the rifles side by side, with the ejection port down, they would look almost identical. I wish I could give you more hope but your best bet is going to be Winchester or a gun Dealer shop for getting this information unless of course you have access to the FBI database which could give you the weapon History.

Ok, now you have me really confused. You know it is a model 1873 because it is stamped Model 1873 but you are asking what the model of the weapon is? What are you looking for on the weapon? If you already know it is a model 1873?

  • Anonymous Nov 24, 2010

And yes, the Model 1873 was considered a carbine when it went into production in the 70's but was actually 2 inches longer than the cavalry issued carbine in the original Military issue which used the shorter 18 inch barrel and a 45-40 cartridge instead of the 30-30 caliber. Most Cav Carbines are 45-40's because that allowed them to use the same ammunition for their side arms as the did for the rifles which simplified logistics of the time. Hope this is more of what you where looking for.

It is a carbine. It is a model designed for Cavalry type gear the ring was meant to stop the rifle from sliding too deep into the saddle carrying slip they used on horses. The letter A has no significance to anyone other than Winchester, it is simply a sequence mark. In fact if you were to report the weapon stolen that letter wouldn't even be entered into the system. If you report a gun of any type stolen and say the serial number is ACD12G5D7 the only thing the police enter into the system that goes nation wide is 1257, the system doesn't even recognize letters. Just FYI information. The Military issue was 45-40 but the .38 caliber long case was a common version sold to everyone else. It is more of an all purpose range rifle but it was not uncommon to find them in Homesteads used for everyday hunting and home defense.
