If the flashing green lights are on the circuit board each is tied to a voltage from the power supply----likely damage is there but a 99 may not be economical to fix in 2012.

I had the same issue occur on my ln55c650 (screen flickering, not the actual image but the front lights flashed which was too distracting) and they had to replace the power supply pc-board. Seems some issue with power module in the TV rather than the side panels. Luckily for me, TV was still in warranty.

tv needs calibration.

Need more input, what model, what brand, do it turn on if you hit the side.

it sounds more to me like you have the video settings for your tv wrong, and the blu-ray is trying to play in a resolution that your tv doesnt support. Go into your HDMI settings again, and go through each of the "checked" resolutions, test each one by one selecting each and then pressing i believe x to test. If a picture is displayed right away, the resolution is supported, if the screen goes black...wait 30 sec or press circle and it will return you back to the settings screen. Unchack any that diddnt give you a picture right away when you tested..then save and try....
