HP Photosmart C5180 All-In-One InkJet Printer Logo
Anonymous Posted on Nov 18, 2010

HP Photosmart C5180 is connected to the network wirelessly but the hp solution centre on my computers says it is disconnected. This is probably why I can't scan to computer, how do I resolve this? I did install all the software. Computers are running XP and OSX10.6. Thanks.

    Thanks for your advice,

I have already done as you have suggested. I'm thinking it's a firewall problem. I can print from all of my computers on this printer, I just can't get it to scan from the printer to the computer. I bypass the hp software and the XP scan software works ok but that's computer to printer.

The printer and the computers are all on the correct network but the hp solution centre says the hp printer is disconnected. Rebooted etc. No change. Adding a device in programs>hp>photosmart doesn't work either.
I did try disabling the Norton firewall to no avail but I know the Windows firewall is still on. How do I disable that(I'm a MacMan)?

    Thanks again.

Verify that you are connected to the correct network - check the SSID of your modem or router. Then verify that the printer is connected to that SSID as well. Check to make sure you have the correct network access number - sometimes an incorrect value gets entered. Once you've established the connection, check each computer for the printer connection of the C5180. They should say "ready" or "online" in the computers for the C5180 - reboot the computers if not.

Printer HP Photosmart C5180 Series cannot be contacted over the network

Check with HP for a Windows 7 driver for the printer. HP Ink Jets require proper drivers to work correctly. Once you have downloaded and installed the drivers try connecting again.
If you have installed the drivers and Windows 7 still refuses to "talk" to the printer, you may have to adjust your advanced network settings as well. Open up the Network and Sharing center, click on advanced sharing settings and make sure file and printer sharing is turned on. Also check "File Sharing Connections" and enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption.
If that fails to work you may need to speak with HP support for further assistance.

Can the C5180 be used as a wireless printer?

if its connected via usb to a desktop pc that is left switched on then yes you can print to it from a wireless computer. You just need to share the printer on the pc that its connected to. Then add a printer on the wireless printer and choose network or wireless. You also need to enable file and printer sharing on both computers

(Re)install the HP software, it usually has a utility to find a device on the network. As soon as it finds the device it will configure it automatically.

HP Photosmart C5180 Cant upload pics from the memory card slots

Didn't try via USB. Via ethernet connect i can reach the card reader by entering '\\printer' in an explorer window. You can find the name of your C5180 on the network settings in the printer menu.

Hope this helps
