Looks like you have a faulty battery, since you bought your laptop 4 months ago, I think it is still covered by their warranty. Please try to contact the manufacturer about the possible battery replacement. :)
Some of the things to do/check if the manufacturer requires you to return your laptop to them: 1. Backup all your important files to a different media/storage, like an external hard drive or burn them to blank DVD's
2. You can also tell them that it MIGHT be your charger that's faulty. Either way, they SHOULD check the battery and charger.

Compaq's are famous for over-heating, if you didn't have a cooling pad under the laptop it may have burned up some components, or it could just need time for the components to cool.

Your battery is probably completely discharged. This can prevent the laptop from starting even WITH the power plugged in. You might try removing the battery, then plug in the AC power adapter. Push the power button and HOLD IT down for 30 seconds (your laptop may or may not start up. If it starts, then shut it down normally.)
Replace the battery. With the AC still plugged in, repeat the start proceedure above. Leave the laptop on until the battery is fully charged. If this doesn't work, then your battery may be bad (this can happen all at once) or worse, your charging system isn't working (less likely.) Your power adapter could also be bad - is the green light on when it's plugged in?

You may have to repeat the proceedure a few times before it works as the battery needs to show a little charge before it will start.

Once started, press F2 while on the dell logo to go to the setup screen. Select the power options. and you should see if the battery is detected. If battery is detected, it should say "charging".

If none of this works, call Dell technical support 800 822-8965 for further assistance

Shuts down right after start up, shuts off.

Hello there!

You have to check your battery meter. Then try to remove the battery and plug-in your laptop directly to adapter without the battery. Just to make sure if its going to start up when you power up your system using your adapter.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

My laptop shut down after powering out with no warning and will not restart.... Toshiba L550 screen stays black but when I hit the enter key it beeps........any suggestions

“My Toshiba laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without any warning. Sometimes it works fine for hours, sometimes it shuts down in 10-15 minutes.” This complaint we hear from our customers over and over again. About 15-20% of all Toshiba laptops we get for repair, suffer from an overheating problem. Yep, OVERHEATING!
This is one of the most common problems with Toshiba laptops we deal with.
Indications of laptop overheating problem:
  1. The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
  2. The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
  3. The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
  4. The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).

Solution:
If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It’s nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.
  1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes (for example Toshiba Satellite A70/A75) you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
  2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
  3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
  4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.
