Most police stations are using the new motorola trunking units, they are on encrypted custom band channels and you will not be able to hear them. All police helicopters are equipped with them. All i can hear where i live is Fire dispatch, I cant even hear the fire fighters responses .
Do you still receive NOAA weather frequencies? Sounds like your local agencies have switched from simplex/standard frequency operation to trunking. I suggest you visit www.RadioReference.com to view the latest on active frequencies and systems in your area.
Congrats on your purchase... you should be able to get fire, ambulance,
police, local utiltity companies, local tv station radios, and a bunch
more... the best way to get your frequencies is online. Alot are posted for different areas.
go to google.com and type in your city, county, and "radio frequencies". you should be able to get free lists of the different codes. Also turn you squelch down.. as soon as you hear static, turn it up just a bit to eliminate the static...that will be at the most sensitive setting without the static.
Have fun... you can also get a list of the "codes" that police officers use so you can tell what they are refering to. google for "police codes"

that is because police are using scramblers to decrypt their transmissions and using more digital transmissions. In order to pick up the conversations, you must find a programmable scanner and have a scrambler modification made. You will find that its nearly impossible to buy a scanner off the shelf that will pick up police anymore. Check with your local neighborhood radio expert to see if they can help
