Did you accidentally buy a SATA notebook drive?

If so, this will not work in your notebook, it used IDE drives.

SOURCE: Can my hard drive be salvaged?

You can definitely get another one, as long as it's compatible with your system...get the original specs from dell, then search online at western digital, tiger direct, etc. etc. Many online sites will have recommendations for your system.
Please consult links here and here
You may want to run chkdsk to see what's up with it...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

SOURCE: smart failure predicted on hard disk 4

Yes usually that error means that the hard drive is telling the controller card that there are some problems with the drive.

Although the drive may still work, it is highly recommended to replace it with a new drive.

I would replace the drive but keep the old drive just in case, after re-installing Vista you find that there is additional data you did not backup or remember to backup.

Just replace the drive, and if it's a Dell laptop, use the Dell Vista reinstallation DVD, and it will not ask for a keycode to reinstall.

May also want to go to another computer and go to support.dell.com and click Drivers and Downloads. Type the service tag and go ahead and download all drivers needed (i.e. network card, sound card, etc.) so after you reinstall Vista, if there are any drivers missing you will be ready to install them.

Hope this helps.

3 - You install the operating system (this erases all data from the hard drive), then install the drivers.
4 - You must install a Antivuris and then install Office programs you need. These all purchases or downloads from the internet(trial 30 day) o free.
5 - copy the backed up files to disk.
tip

How back up your files (data) before doing system restore

1. Use of pre-installed backup tools. Many computers have a backup software installed when you buy (including Time Machine backup and restore for Mac or Windows). These tools are designed to transfer files to various media they create on the computer hard drive or external hard drive, you can prevent a total loss of data is performed. When you open the utility, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the backup.

2. Back up important files on a USB stick or Memory Stick. Insert the stick into a USB port on your computer. Drag the selected files to the disk icon on the desktop (Mac) or PC (Windows) will appear. Flash drives and memory sticks are very mobile and can be stored in small spaces such as basements. Although they generally do not have a capacity of more than a few gigabytes (GB), they are large enough to store your important files.

3. Enter an external hard drive. These external hard drives usually have a very large capacity and can therefore keep most or all files on a disk. Connect the external hard drive via a USB port. You can drag and drop files on your hard disk or use it as a means of backup using a backup utility installed.

4. Burn your important files on a CD-R or DVD-R. an entire hard disk backup can be many slices, so this option is ideal if you want large media files or documents for easy access later. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM and follow the instructions on the screen (for Windows and Mac) to back up and store files.

5. Upload files for storage in the cloud. Services in the Internet cloud storage (like Mozy and drop-down box) are great ways to backup files to the internet access from any Internet enabled device. Important files with sensitive information may only be attached to a back-up cloud services such as Mozy. Clouds, Drop box is ideal for backing up photos, videos and other files less sensitive.
I found following wording on my motherboard: CL-2 SU 94V-0 E241819 What are they telling us? Where can I get the manual and drivers. It seems many drivers are missing when I installed the XP,...

Theyare telling you that your computer takes PC-100 memory at a clock speed of 222Hz. This is memory for older, slower, Pentium III computers. It wiil run Windows Xp Pro on a pentium III at a fairly good speed if you install at least 512MB and have a hard drive with 30GB of disk space. This memory shipped with the pentium III that usually had a HD of 10GB or less in computers made around 2001-2002.
