that is from a bad video board..try turning it off to reset the values, but I'm not confident it's recoverable without some serious technical help

Sounds like a video problem. You could have bad solder joints in the video circuit. Try knocking on the side of the tv set when the problem occurs it might confirm the diagnostic. Otherwise you have some intermittent components that need to be replaced. If you feel handy with a soldering iron you can go inside and knock around the circuit board to pinpoint the source of the problem. Otherwise you might need the help of a local repairman.
