I was typing on my EM-530 when suddenly it just stopped printing the letters I was typing. I know what the problem is NOT but i dont know how to fix this!
It is not that it's not plugged in, the lights are on and i can move it left and right. It is also not that the motor or electrical's dead because again, the machine moves perfectly otherwise.
It is not that the ribbon is installed incorrectly or slipped. I checked repeatedly and reinserted it. I have been using this typewriter for several years and know when it's in place right. Also, it was typing perfectly fine before, with the same ribbon placed in the same way.
It is not that the correction tape is getting in the way - i removed it and it still isnt working.
It is not that the hammer isnt in place or that the daisy wheel isnt in correctly, I placed the daisy wheel according to directions and pushed the level on the hammer twice to align the wheel and lock it in place.
So what am i not thinking of? I tried checking the settings, and resetting them to no avail!! Any ideas?

Also - i did check out the wheel and nothing seems out of place. I even entertained the idea it could be a funny setting i accidentally pushed but after going through all the troubleshooting in the manual I dont think it's that. Also there are no funny lights lit up.

That was it! It was a solenoid. Buyer beware about Brother Typewriters - apperantly it's REALLY hard to find anyone to service them. I lucked out with finding an IBM typewriter repairman that knew enough about brothers to diagnosei t as a solenoid problem and fixed it for us. You're right - it was relatively cheap. I heard from someone else the other day about the solenoid going out. That would keep the wheel from engaging onto the ribbon and paper. The correction tape may be installed wrong, or it may be a tacky L/o that will stick nand not raise up.. You can find a manual at BROTHER.COM, click on support.
Hi Many brother type writers have two cam assemblies under ribbon holder. One operates the print hammer and the other operates the correction ribbon lift. sometimes they gets stuck or lock themselves up. turning on and off a few times will take care of it, but sometimes it needs to be worked on by a tech. If you look when you type a character, most likely the print hammer is not firing or it is striking the correction ribbon instead of the black ribbon. Let us know if you want to know something more else please accept the suggestion. Thanks for contacting Fixya.com
This typewriter uses a "printwheel" In order to change tye typestyle (font) you must change (purchase) a different printwheel. To change the printwheel, pull the lever on the RH side of th print hammer towards the front of the machine and lift the clear plastic cartridge UP. . Contact Brother International for a printwheel or Yellow pages for a local dealer.
Hi there. Take out the printwheel and see if any of the spokes are bent. That would cause wrong letters. . Also if the print solenoid(piston) does not go in and out freely. Lawrence
I just talked to A Brother Customer Service Agent, I have a EM-530, and was having the same problem with my keys and symbols. Turn off your typewriter, hold down your Code, Shift and Tab key at the same time. Keep holding them down while you turn your machine back on. This will restore your factory settings competely. You will have to change your margins and tabs to where you like them again. If it continues to not type the write symbols, push code and the letter "K" and watch the upper left lights with roman numerals I II & III (KB is under the numerals), when the light is just on roman number I, let up the code key, turn off for ten seconds and then turn it back on. The keyboard has now reset and all should be well.
yes it's a wheel.
