Sound like you may need a new battery. look on the archos FAQ page to see if that is what it is. if so you can do this two ways you can fit the battery your self, you can buy the battery from newmp3technology.com or type archos.co.uk. or you can send it to the archos repair by calling 0870 609 1693 this will put you to the archos uk repair team

have u got and anti-viruse on up pc, does the archos still connect up to the pc. try this first if not try the reset then try to format. i need to know a bit more to help
I had the same problem and changed the battery on Monday. Works fine. There are just four small screws to remove.
Replacement battery can be found here: http://newmp3technology.com/404-battery.htm. I used them and can confirm that the battery comes with the right connector for the Archos 404.
Aha - that is a different matter. To get the computer to recognize the device:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
You might want to double-check your Archos manual first - sometimes, instead of Volume +, they reccomend a different button.
Try turning the unit on with the hard drive disconnected. When I did this (mine had a similar problem) a screen came up and asked me if I wanted to format. I plugged the hard drive back in and reformatted. I had to format twice, but after that it worked fine.
Choos 'Repair disk' while connected to your computer, then go onto www.archos.com go into support, downloads, choose your model and clck on download archos..... Then go into my computer click on the archos device after that has finished downloading and drag that file into the archos folder and the rest it does itself.
