Question about Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder
I do typing for 3 people, 2 of which send me dss files and one of which sends me ds2 files. I cannot open the ds2 files. I have been told that if i load the software for ds2 file, it will conflict with the other dss software. Is there a way of converting the ds2 file to a dss file?
Much appreciated if you could help me.
Best option is to get the person using the recorder which creates the .ds2 files, which is likely to be an Olympus DS-5000, to set the recorder to record audio in "classic mode" which will produce .dss files. Here is a YouTube video on how to set the DS-5000 to record in classic mode.

DSS files are produced by professional voice recorders like the Olympus DS-5000 and Philips LFH-9600.
You can convert DSS Pro files (.ds2) and DSS Classic files (.dss) to Wave files (.wav) with DSS Pro File Converter . The software is $19 but comes with at free 30 day trial. It is sold by PCDictate.com a great place to purchase USB foot pedals and other transcription equipment.

This is not a solution, but from my experience, you can load the new Olympus software and it will read the DSS file format. Also in the new Olympus program you can manually convert the DS2 format to DSS format. I have also found the NCH transcription software that uses the IN-USB pedal to be helpful. This is a free download from www.nch.com.au/scribe

I am a contract transcriptionist and have an Olympus DSS player AS-2300. I had searched online for a answer to transcribing the new DS2 formats and found no viable solution. Fortunately, I finally broke down and called Olympus. I wish I had done that in the beginning. Not sure where they get the bad rap for customer service. They were great. I emailed me a link for two updates to download for FREE and it worked. I'm back in business -- literally.

Hey guys. You can use DSS to wave converter from turbodictation.com for the same. There is a trial which can be downloaded to check on this. No need to pay anyone for this till you are sure if this is what you are looking for. Inder.

Hopefully I can help out some:
1) The DSS Pro format is a proprietary format, as is the DSS format, and it's very unlikely ExpressScribe will be able to listen to them. According to Olympus and Philips, ExpressScribe's makers are using the DSS format without licensing it from the owners, so don't expect the manufacturers to help ExpressScribe in the future.
2) If you're using Olympus software now, you can update your software to listen to .ds2 (DSS Pro) files simply by getting the latest update (see http://www.AmericanDictation.com/Support.html, click on "Downloads").
3) If you don't have the Olympus software, there is no way of converting .ds2 to .dss. Your dictator will have to change their DS-5000 to record in "Classic" mode.
4) The new DS-2400 ONLY records in .ds2 format, so you will need the later software, or the AS-2400 Transcription Kit to be able to listen to files produced by this consumer recorder.
I know it's confusing, and the new format is causing some issues with folks. However, the new format does give users better security options and better sound quality.
If you transcribe lots of work, you may well want to consider getting an AS-5000 Transcription Kit, which gives you the ability to listen to all formats, convert from one format to the other, and securely transfer files over the Internet.
My 2 cents.

Just to add: Olympus Pro Dictate Versino 5 will allow you to Automatically convert any files loaded into one of its folders from DS2 to DSS format. Go to Options/Folder Design. click on a folder and look at the line item "Format Conversion". If you have version 4 of Olympus Pro, you get version 5 upgrade at no cost. You just need to download or request it from a dealer. If you are not Pro 4, then you have to pay for the upgrade, $99 list. Getting the DS5000 user to change to DSS Classic is best option, IF they are on DS5000's. If they are on the DS2400, you are out of luck.

I use GearPlayer v3 to v4 and have no problem listening to the ds2 files. I purchased it from TranscriptionGear.com. Been doing business with them for many, many years and they have an absolutely terrific support group!

What you need is the Olympus AS-5001 Dictation Software, which allow you automatically/manually convert .ds2 format do .dss format.

This solution has to be done with the recorder itself to automatically change the newer DS2 files to dss files

You just need to download and run a TrueSpeechCodec and it should work after that.

I was able to change it to record in classic format using the Olympus software development kit. I created a program that does this automatically when the recorder is plugged in.
