Question about Seagate Free Agent Go Small 12 GB USB External HD ST600121GSA1E1-RK USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

I have the seagate 500 gb p/n 9nk2AL-510 and I went to go use it the other day and say that the usb port on the back of it has come loose. I am unable to plug a usb into it now. Is there any way to fix this? I can not lose this because I have a lot of important things on there that can not be replaced.

Hello, Ultrastigi -

You may find the instructions here helpful:
https://superuser.com/questions/1122023/my-seagate-1tb-external-hard-drives-micro-usb-port-is-broken

If you do not feel sure of yourself to perform the recommend repair steps, it may be worth the cost to take your Seagate external hard drive to a reputable local computer repair business and find out if they can make the repair.

Note: You will probably have to pay an upfront fee to evaluate what needs to be done to repair the external hard drive. The upfront evaluation fee will then be applied to the actual repair costs.

Personal opinion: It may be well worth it to pay a repair professional to fix the external hard drive versus the chance of your trying to repair it and failing and losing the data saved.

The usb port probably needs to be re-attached to the board, it would likely with have to be soldered.

You may also be able to remove the actual drive from the external enclosure, look online for info on that.

There's not much troubelshooting you can do with a failed external disk. power off PC and hd and then disconnect all cables, wait 30 secs, power the PC on, let it boot to the OS, power the hard drive on and then connect. If the drive shows up but you still cannot access it or get weird property readings, it generally means the hd controller has failed. If the data's worth more than $1000, you can take it to a data recovery group like Ontrak or Cherry Systems, but otherwise, just get a new hd and restore whatever backups you have.

Purchase a new "empty" enclosure, and "transplant" the disk-drive from inside your enclosure into the new enclosure. Cost will be $30 to $40, but all your files on your disk-drive will be accessible.

I had a similar problem and I had to "Delete Volume" when in DIsk Management. I then had a choice to "Create Simple Volume" which I did, and then a wizard created the correct partitions and assigned a drive letter to my external drive. Everything was them OK.

500GB drive. P/N 9nk2al-500 works for 10 mins then stops. Had a guy in Australia look at it, couldn't help me.

1. How long do you have this disk and how often do you use it? 2. Did you have any problems before? 3. How stops? Suddenly?
What about heat problem, maybe this disk overheating.
PS: What kind of guy? Repairman in service?

New Seagate FreeAgentPro USB eSATA 500GB power on light not glows

Thank you for your reply.

I have solved the problem with local help.

Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.

Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.
