We've had our toshiba dvd/vcr player (SDV 392) for awhile and we've never had problems. All of a sudden though, when transferring it to another room, it doesn't seem to work. The tv is in color. It records. But its in black and white. I don't know why this is.

Try connecting scart lead to another socket on tv, if you have more than 1 scart, or try replacing scart lead if that doesnt work.

Allegro DVD/VCR combo - not reading disk & eating tapes.

Sorry I know very little about the dvd side but my experience with several VCRs is they need cleaning sometimes just like audio tape recorders and players need cleaning. Early in my days of VCR ownership the engineer I used was sick of seeing me and taught me how to clean the heads, guides and rollers myself to restore performance and help prevent tapes being chewed. Head cleaning tapes simply did not reach the parts needing cleaning though the the wet type sometimes helped.

A VCR might work normally for several months and then suddenly it would happen again. Sometimes I needed to do a clean several times in a month. I did have a Sharp VCR once and that had something called an idler reel that would "suddenly" need replacing (several times) due to chewed tapes but other than that manual cleaning did the job every time.

Later VCRs were fitted with a self cleaner that worked well and meant there was no trouble for a long time but when the self cleaner became loaded with filth they actually made matters worse.
Matter of interest, I use clean newspaper and methylated spirit for cleaning.

Just bought a Toshiba refurbished DVD/VCR player. The remote doesn't work at all. I've doublechecked the NEW batteries and tried a tip of pushing EVERY button with the batteries out. Any ideas

1) the batteries will be the same type and full charged
2) clean the contacts battery from dirty, dust, oxide or corrosion
3) retight the spring contacts battery with pliers for a GOOD contacts
4) open the remote.control and clean the keypads switch, from dirty, dust, oxide, Open contacts, or Bad contacts. they emite a good signal infrared from SYScon transmi vs Syscon receiver.
see the block diagram. If doesnot resolve the problem go to the repair shop TV for fix it.
God bless you

Sylvania (SRD3900) DVD Player / VCR Combo i can't seem to plug in the red/white/yellow cables into the right places directly to my old toshiba tv to play either tapes or dvds. can you instruct me? thanks.

Greetings - It's very simple so I'll show you how and then I think it may be another problem (nothing broken).

You need to plug the corresponding color cables into to outputs on your player I've circled above and then into the corresponding inputs on the TV. You've probably done this correctly.
PLUS - You have to, using the remote for the player, set the source to either DVD or VCR and then you have to, finally, on your TV set the input (with the remote) to what is called probably VIDEO or VIDEO1. If there is still nothing on the screen keep (with the DVD or Tape playing) hitting the TV remote input button until you see an image or you've come around to where you started.

Unless something is broken (unlikely) you should be able to watch DVD's or Tapes depending on what input you select on the player.

If it's not working you've somehow missed a step or the Video input on the TV is called something else. If that happens come back here and give the player AND TV brand/model info and someone will be able resolve your problem.

Good Luck and thanks for using Fix Ya.

SD-V592SU: static noise

That's a stumper.

Personally, I have a simular unit and I just leave it on all the time.

Other than that, borrow a DVD or VCR or combo from a friend and see if it does the same thing. At least you can narrow it down to the combo player or the TV.

DVD Picture jumps and freezes

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
