You must have both cartridges fitted for the printer to work. The colour cartridge can be empty if you don't want to print any colour, but it must still be in there. When the ink monitor prompts you to replace the colour cart, just lift it out and push back down. This will reset the ink counter.
This is ok to do in emergency, but not a good practice as you'll end up with colour printhead full of air. If you're doing this to save ink, just buy some generic colour cartridges, they're quite cheap.
